  2. Paul is Dead • In the 1960’s a rumour was circulated that one of the members of the group the Beatles had died • It was Paul Macartney • Various “clues” as to his death were supposed to be seen on the cover of their LP.

  3. Paul is Dead • One of the group wears a three cornered hat • The scene is very “funereal”. • Someone has a hand on Paul’s left shoulder

  4. The photo on the inside cover has Paul McCartney wearing a badge with some letters

  5. Blowing up the picture shows the letters OPD • This was believed to stand for “Officially pronounced dead”

  6. On the back cover Paul’s back is turned away.

  7. On a later album Paul is shown wearing bare feet

  8. Why were there rumours? • To help publicise the album and increase sales? • Spread by people as a bit of fun? • It was real? • In fact, 30 years later, Paul Macartney is living in Sussex and making music.

  9. September 11th • These terrible events were the subject of a lot of information on the internet • A lot of the information that was available seemed shocking • Some was actually false and some was true

  10. The Coup • The image on the right was circulated around the world by e mail. • The message sent with the image said that a New York group called the Coup had made this CD cover just before September 11th showing the twin towers being blown up

  11. The Coup • The “rumour” about the image turned out to be true – they altered picture of the Twin Towers to show them being blown up • The record company produced a new cover and the old one was never released a few months after September 11th.

  12. The Coup Lead rapper MC Boots Riley said about the cover: “The Coup are deeply saddened by this horrible tragedy. A new cover has been designed for Party Music’s November 6 release. We took the pictures on May 15, and we were done with it by the beginning of June. Any similarities are totally coincidental . . . .“

  13. Starbucks • A rumour was spread by e mail and on the internet about a Starbucks Coffee shop in New York • It said that ambulance workers trying to rescue people on September 11th were charged £100 for bottled water used to treat victims.

  14. Starbucks • You may be surprised to learn that this rumour turned out to be true . . . but it only involved one person. • However, try to think how anyone involved or seeing such terrible events might feel – would you think straight?? • In fact Starbucks were kept open 24 hours a day 7 days a week to support the relief effort and became a very important place for relief workers to recover briefly.

  15. Within a few days of September 11th this e mail was sent to many people. The next slide shows what happens if the follow the instructions. 18. Another image rumour that was sent involved someone called the “Lost Tourist” The date on the picture is 11th September The rumour said that this picture was from a camera found in the wreckage of the buildings Missing

  21. Bert Did you notice this image?

  22. The person who put together the poster had used the internet to find images of Bin Laden Unfortunately they didn’t check the images they used very carefully One image came from a comedy web site called “Bert is Evil” The web site has a number of faked photographs showing a Muppet called Bert with different people Bert

  23. Whenever you use the internet for information remember these key points • Check sources – can you be sure information is accurate or correct • Compare sources – try to find more information that supports what you have found • Decide if you believe it or not – if you don’t or are not sure then don’t use it.
