During the war: 1950 • 1950: North Korea was winning • South Korea asked the US for help – the US and 16 other nations sent soldiers to South Korea – the North Koreans were driven back • Since the US had soldiers in Korea, and based on how proxy wars work, what do you think the Soviet Union did next? • A proxy was is a war instigated by a major power that does not itself become involved
During the War: 1951-1953 • In Nov 1950 China sent 200,000 “volunteers” to help North Korea • South Korea and the US were pushed back • The US put more soldiers into Korea, pushed the North Koreans back to the 38th parallel • In 1953, a ceasefire was agreed upon, but 10% of Koreans were killed in the war • 1954 – US created SEATO – Asian version of NATO (South East Asian Treaty Organisation)
