  1. What is your nervous system?

  2. Neurons

  3. Your Hairy Senses HEARING & BALANCE

  4. Transduction Got it!!!

  5. Why do we call our sense of hearing and balance…..the “hairy” senses? Cilia Hair cell

  6. Where are these hair cells? Semicircular canals Cochlea Inner Ear Middle Ear External Ear

  7. How do these hair cells work? Cilia like hair moves….the cilia bend.

  8. When the cilia bends….. …it pulls on the tip links.

  9. Pulling on the tip links….. …opens the “door” for chemicals.

  10. Bending the cilia on the hair cells… …lets the hair cells “talk” to the neurons .

  11. What makes the hair cells bend?

  12. First, let’s look at your... …Vestibular System.

  13. Hair cells in different places…. Rotary Movement Linear Movement …give different kinds of information.

  14. To make the hair cells bend…. …you have to move!!!

  15. Moving makes the hair cells bend…. …sending info to the brain.

  16. BUT…only some parts of your brain… ≠ ≠ ≠ …get info from your vestibular system.

  17. Next, let’s look at your... …Auditory System.

  18. Molecules in the air move. Frequency Amplitude

  19. The hair cells for the auditory system... Cochlea …are wrapped up in a coil.

  20. So let’s see how it works…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGSKliPSJ7I

  21. So let’s see how it works…. Transduction

  22. The brain then gets the info… … about the sounds.
