Early Life • Abel Tesfaye was born February 16, 1990 in Scarborough, Ontario Canada. • Father was not involved in his life and his mother was always working so he grew up with his grandmother. • As a result Tesfaye speaks fluent Amharic, it was the first language he learned. • He came up with his stage name after dropping out of high school at the age of 17 and with a fellow crew member left one weekend and never came back home.

  3. Early Career • In Toronto Tesfaye met Jeremy Rose who took interest in The Weeknd • Together they produced three songs; “What You Need”, “Loft Music”, and “The Morning” although the songs were eventually scrapped. • Tesfaye took the three songs and uploaded them to YouTube in December 2010. • Tesfaye’s videos were noticed by Drake who helped generate interest in The Weeknd.

  4. The US Tour • The Weeknd began his US tour in April 2012 at the Coachella Festival. • Him and his band toured various major cities including New York where they sold out two shows where they were critically acclaimed by The Rolling Stone.

  5. Artistry • The Weeknds music features slow tempos, rumbling bass and forlorn echoes. • They sing in falsetto register at many points during their songs while exhibiting a pleading, anxious tone. • Many of the song lyrics are very emotional
