  5. Student Profile – Samuel Harris The 4 year BSc course offers a placement year which allowed me to build on fundamental experiences and is paving the way for further research. I was able to construct a dissertation based on archaeomagnetic dating and I hope to take this with me to master’s level and beyond. Some of my best experiences have been the field trips around the UK visiting the famous (Stonehenge Landscape), and not so famous (Ingram Valley) archaeological sites.

  6. Biomedical Science • The study of normal life processes in humans and provides an understanding of the causes and consequences of human disease. • The methods used in the investigation and diagnosis of human disease are also explored. Specialisation in: • Cancer Biology • Medical Biochemistry • Medical Cell Biology • Medical Microbiology • Haematology

  10. Chemistry and Forensic Science – Special Features • Flexible study patterns including 'practitioner' (BSc) and 'researcher' (MChem/MSci) pathways . • An opportunity to spend a year gaining experience in the workplace supported by the Department's sandwich course programme. • Training in modern spectroscopic and analytical techniques that includes 'hands-on' experience of the use of research equipment. • A focus on practical work that enables students to develop confidence and experience in specialist laboratory environments. • Our record in placing graduates into employment is one of the best in the country.

  11. Chemistry4 • MChem Chemistry -(3-year + 1-year placement) For careers across the spectrum of employment from specialist science to finance, management and teaching • MChem Chemistry for Analysis (3-year + 1-year placement) For careers in molecular measurement • MChem Chemistry for Drug Discovery (3-year + 1-year placement) For careers in designing and making new drugs to combat disease • MChem Chemistry for Medicines Development (3-year + 1-year placement) For careers in formulating new medicines for pharmacy • MChem Chemistry for Forensic Sciences (3-year + 1-year placement) For careers in forensic and crime scene sciences (3-year BSc exits are optionally available for all courses)

  12. Chemistry and Forensic Science - MChem Key Features • Excellent graduate employability • Modern interactive teaching approaches • Friendly, supportive learning environment • 1 year placements (in Year 4) build genuine experience and provide opportunities for seamless transition into employment • Research placements with internationally renown groups • Industrial placements with major multinational employers • Excellent facilities for teaching and ‘hands-on’ research

  13. Student Profile - Malgorzata Wyszecka I just finished my third year of chemistry and the atmosphere at the university is great! I love the fact that the course is not overcrowded and lecturers know everyone by their names and that you can talk to them and your tutor whenever you feel you need to. The laboratory sessions are very well prepared and you even get chance to design your experiment later on in the course!

  14. Clinical Sciences • Foundation Year in Clinical Sciences/Medicine • First Year ‘mirrors’ syllabus at Leeds’ School of Medicine MBChB programme • Offers routes to the University of Leeds' School of Medicine MBChB programme or to qualifications in allied healthcare programmes.

  15. Clinical Sciences – Special Features • We provide high-quality, multidisciplinary courses that provide the skills required by 'Tomorrow's Doctors' and other healthcare professionals. • Professional development and special study modules will train students to develop skills to direct their own learning throughout the course and in their future careers. • There will be opportunities for short periods of experiential training in a variety of healthcare settings.

  16. Healthcare Science Triple accreditation from Institute of Biomedical Science, Health Professions Council and Medical Education England. • Genetics • Blood Sciences • Infection Sciences • Cellular Sciences

  17. Healthcare Science – Special Features • Placements, in specialist NHS labs – part of the curriculum in each year of course • Broad range of subjects, with in-depth specialisation in particular areas • Graduates will be able to consider wide range of careers, as well as NHS.

  18. Student Profile – Oliver Jowett I spent a few weeks at the Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Service, at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. The depth of what you're expected to know in a work scenario is something that I could not have picked up whilst studying at university. It advanced my practical skills beyond that of my peers. My employers were supportive and constructive as they provided training and experience that is hard to come by.

  19. Optometry • Healthcare profession concerned with examination, diagnosis and treatment of the human vision system. • Our three-year course is based on both fundamental academic studies and detailed clinical and practical classes. • Modern purpose built Eye Clinic • Pre-registration period on graduation

  20. Optometry – Special Features • The course is scientifically based, with a particular emphasis on the clinical practice of optometry. • The department has one of the highest percentages of registered optometrists as members of academic staff across all UK universities - research and teaching experience. • Students see patients in the University's own clinics, and also attend local hospitals where students are instructed in the recognition of eye disease by senior ophthalmologists.

  21. Student Profile – Aimee Rutherford Bradford has a very good reputation for Optometry. I had a look at other Universities, and Bradford was my favourite. There is the Eye Clinic, where many of our practical sessions are held with volunteer patients. There are also practice rooms which contain all of the necessary equipment needed. In the Eye Clinic we are taught how to use up to date equipment on patients and different techniques that can be carried out.

  22. Pharmacy • Science-based health profession concerned with medicines and their use in the treatment and prevention of disease. • Aim to produce experts in medicines and includes extensive teaching in the areas of Drug Design, Drug Delivery, Drug Action and Drug Management. • Enthusiastic, caring and approachable staff who are committed to ensuring that graduates are fully prepared for the many roles that pharmacists undertake. • Registration as a 'pharmacist' is conditional upon successful completion of an MPharm degree in pharmacy, one year of professional experience in an approved pharmaceutical establishment, and passing a national examination conducted by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

  23. Pharmacy – Special Features • Two course pathways: five-year integrated practice course, or traditional four-year continuous course . • Both courses enable students to achieve registration as a pharmacist within five years • Opportunity to experience two areas of practice on five-year course. • Pharmacy helps find students placements, and makes sure they offer comprehensive training in pharmaceutical practice. • Sponsorship is not required, and students are paid a salary during their training.

  24. Student Profile – Dane Howard Having spent 5 years at Bradford as an MPharm sandwich student I had the opportunity to see how pharmacy works in both the Hospital and Community sectors. The advantage allowed me to use the knowledge I gained while out in practice to improve my grades and get the most of the remaining time left as a student before entering the big wide world of Pharmacy!
