Collaboration is at the heart of the Academy • Regionally, Nationally, Globally • The more advanced, the farther & fewer are collaborators • Networks are essential to the new conduct of science: data & compute-intensive science • Dispersed sources of data, storage, analysis, modeling • In every discipline: Physics, Chem, Math, Sociology, Medicine, Climate, Music • Networks are essential to instruction delivery & learning • Online content delivery, testing & learning, research, MOOCs • Performance is critical and growth is exponential • Data movement : packet size and speed • Analysis must scale with the data • Security cannot be sacrificed for performance The Motivation
