  2. Attributes that are more shared with us • Categorizing is not important but understanding the attributes is Communicable Attributes

  3. 1. Spirituality-What is God made of? What is the material that forms His being? • John 4:24-God is spirit. • Psalm 139:7-10 • God exists as a being that is not made of any matter, has no parts or dimensions, is unable to be perceived by our bodily senses, and is more excellent than any other kind of existence-Grudem God’s Being

  4. 2. Invisibility-God’s total existence will never be seen by us yet God still shoes himself to us through visible, created things. • John 1:18-No one has ever seen God • 1 Timothy 6:16 • The Lord spoke to Moses face to face-Exodus 33:11 but God would not let Moses see His face God’s Being

Theophany-An appearance of God: Abraham, Jacob, Israel (pillar of cloud and fire), Isaiah, etc. • John 14:9-He who has seen me has seen the Father • Will we see God in heaven? • Matthew 5:8-Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God • We probably won’t know until we get to heaven God’s Being

  6. 1. Knowledge (Omniscience)-God fully knows Himself and all things actual and possible. • Matthew 10:30 • 1 Samuel 23:11-13 • Matthew 11:21 • If God knows the future, do our actions matter? • Freedom vs Self-determination Mental Attributes

Wisdom-God always chooses the best goals and best means to them. • Job 9:4-God is wise in heart • God’s wisdom is seen in: creation, plan of redemption, simplicity of the gospel • It is communicable because we can ask God for wisdom-James 1:5 • Psalm 111:10-The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom Mental Attributes

  8. 3. Truthfulness(Faithfulness)-He is the true God, and all of His knowledge and words are both true and the final standard for truth. • John 17:3 • God is reliable and faithful in Hos words • God cannot lie • We should love truth and hate falsehood Mental Attributes

  9. 1. Goodness-God is the final standard of good and all that he does is worthy of approval • Luke 18:19-None of us are good • Genesis 1:31-He saw creation and it was good • James 1:17-Every good and perfect gift comes from above • Galatians 6:10-Let us do good to all men Moral Attributes

  10. 2. Love-Eternally gives himself to others • 1 John 4:8-10-God is love • John 3:16 • Romans 5:8-God showed his love while we were sinners Christ died for us • Matthew 22:37-38-Great Commandment Moral Attributes

  11. 3. Mercy and grace • Mercy-Not getting something we deserve • Grace-Getting something we do not deserve • 2 Samuel 24:14-Let us fall on the hand of the Lord for his mercy is great • Romans 11:6-If by grace it is no longer on the basis of works… Moral Attributes

  12. 4. Patience-Withholding punishment for those who deserve it • God is slow to anger • Perfect patience 1 Timothy 3:16 • James 1:19-Slow to anger • Patient in suffering 1 Peter 2:20 Moral Attributes

  13. Holiness-Separated from sin and seeking his own honor • 1 Peter 1:16-Be holy for I am holy • Hebrews 12:10-Strive for holiness Moral Attributes
