A closer look at one school • Jacksonville High School (1078 students) • Our SLC journey began in 2002-03 (see journey map) • IMPACT advisory-by grade level • and by academy • Freshman Academy for all ninth graders • Career/Themed Academies-Education and Training Academy, Health Sciences Academy, International Studies Academy, Information Technology & Engineering Academy, Creative & Performing Arts Academy Impacting Students to Impact Our World

  4. What is Freshman Academy at JHS? • FA is provides the foundation for our career academies • Personalization • Family Engagement through Joining Activities • Service Learning • Extracurricular activities Impacting Students to Impact Our World JACKSONVILLE HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMAN ACADEMY

National Career Academy Coalition • Onslow County Schools advocates the use of the 10 National Standards of Practice as identified by the National Career Academy Coalition • HSA was the first Onslow County career academy to go through the certification process to be nationally certified by NCAC • Utilizing the 10 NSOP moves an SLC from a program to a career academy • The standards provide a framework for the work conducted in a career academy Impacting Students to Impact Our World

Health Sciences Academy • Weekly advisory class • HSA IMPACT curriculum has health field related lessons • Joining activities • Parent involvement • An advisory board with parents and community members • Service Learning with Red Cross and Onslow Memorial Hospital • Rigor through HSA programs: Pharmacy Technician and Certified Nurse Assistant Impacting Students to Impact Our World

Education & Training Academy • Weekly advisory class • ETA IMPACT curriculum addresses critical topics in education today • Induction ceremony in the fall • Shadowing and Internships in areas of interest • Early Childhood I and II • Teacher Cadet I and II • Participation in state level conferences • Monthly activities Impacting Students to Impact Our World

Information Technology & Engineering Academy • Weekly advisory class • ITEA IMPACT curriculum incorporates career related topics based upon CTE resources • Advisory board and community partnerships • Post secondary articulation agreements • Career and Technology Education- career certifications available in the T & I courses Impacting Students to Impact Our World

Results… • 08-09-96% of ninth graders on track with 6 credits or more (264/276) • 09-10-97% of ninth graders on track (334-343) • 08-09-100% of academy students are on track for graduation (grades 10-12) • 09-10-100% of academy students are on track for graduation (grades 10-12) • 07-08-Drop out rate=4.23% • 08-09 Dropout rate=4.18% Impacting Students to Impact Our World
