  5. How do we know if students are successful? Student success is measured in many ways, but the most standard way students demonstrate academic proficiency is on state/national assessments. 9th Grade – PLAN/EXPLORE 10th Grade – PLAN 11th Grade – ACT*/PSAT 12th Grade – ACT/SAT *Students are required by law to take the MME-ACT in the Spring of their Junior Year

  6. How do we know if students are successful? ACT has benchmark scores that indicate that a student is likely to be successful in a college level class. (50% likely to get C or better)

  7. What how do successful students perform in other areas? • 75% of OPHS students with a 21+ on the ACT have a 2.8 Cumulative GPA or higher *AND • 75% of OPHS students with a 21+ on the ACT have a 90% attendance rate (less than 10 absences) or better *AND • 75% of OPHS students with a 21+ on the ACT have a B or higher in their core academic classes. *Successful students met all of the above criteria

  8. What do successful students do? Many students have the mistaken belief that they are naturally good or not good in certain subjects. They use this belief as a psychological defense mechanism to escape the fear of failure in things that are hard and a false sense of accomplishment in things that they do well.

  10. So what are the habits of successful students? • Successful students have the following habits: • Set goals for themselves • Monitor their own progress • Believe that it’s important to do well in school • Seek help when they need it

What do parents of successful students do? • Help their children to make choices that will lead to success in adult life. • Help their children set goals for themselves. • Monitor their progress and provide guidance when children are off task. • Believe that their children are capable of anything; have strong value on education. • Seek additional assistance for their children when needed.

  12. What can we do to increase parental involvement at Oak Park High School? How can we get more students & parents to engage in these habits? What works for you as a parent in getting your child to achieve success? (Discussion & Q/A)
