  2. Career Research! WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

  3. Review of Key Terms • Job vs. Career A career is a series of related jobs built on a foundation of interests, skills, experience and education.

  4. Which witch is which? JOB • Cashier at Wendy’s • Restaurant Manager • Oil mechanic at Jiffy Lube • Automotive Technician • Educator • Teacher at HHS CAREER JOB CAREER CAREER JOB

  5. So, careers are basically good jobs, right? • Try this one: Chief Executive Officer Fast Food Executive What other kinds of jobs might a CEO in the fast food industry have had earlier in his career? JOB CAREER

  6. CHALLENGE! Now, think of a career field. When I say GO, you will have 2 minutes to write down as many jobs that would fit in that career as possible in the box on your worksheet.

What is the Bureau of Labor Statistics? • A research agency of the US Department of Labor; it compiles statistics on hours of work, average hourly earnings, employment and unemployment, consumer prices and many other variables. • Run by Federal Government • Includes information for just about every cluster, career, and job in the U.S.!

  10. Why use research data? • Time is money. • College is expensive. • This is the only life you get!! The average person spends 10 years of their life at work. You should probably do something you enjoy 

Exit Ticket • Based on your research today, explain in a single paragraph… • Why one of the careers you researched today (your choice!) would or would not be a good career field for you to pursue directly after high school. Give specific reasons. • Should you consider intangible rewards when choosing to pursue a career? Why or why not?

  14. Objective • Using the Occupational Outlook Handbook, students will begin to research jobs and careers of interest in order to make an informed career decision.

  15. Today’s research: • Today, you will continue career research by learning about oneadditional career/jobs. • Be sure to accurately summarize the nature of the work, the required skills and training, and the work environment of your careers. • You will receive oneresearch worksheet.
