  3. Size and Scope of FSNE • Begin in 1988 – 1 Wisconsin county • 1992 – Recognized as FNS national focus • FNS recognized extension system as important partner • 2007 – Land-Grant Universities in 46 states had FSNE projects • Land-Grant Universities contributed $125 million

  4. Why an Assessment? • 1999 – Concern – inconsistencies, lack of understanding of university system • Sought help from federal partner, CSREES • Karen Konzelmann – 25% time designated to initiate dialogue • North Central Region initiated pilot of self assessment – Larry Jones to work with Karen Konzelmann • Initial success led to decision through ECOP for national Extension Assessment

  5. Next Steps • Three year pilot began in 2002 • CSREES – funded ½ position for pilot • 2002 – Helen Chipman asked to provide full time national leadership

  8. New Model • 2006 – CSREES – emphasis on low-income food and nutrition education • Wells Willis retirement • ECOP – FSNE Planning Team • Shift to office and tasks • Still federal/state financial commitment • Continued shared leadership

  9. FSNE Virtual Office Description • Support services for the Land-Grant University System that provides FSNE • Utilizes remote communication technology • System resource for Program Coordinators, FCS Leaders/Administrators and Extension Directors/Administrators

  10. Virtual Office Description Continued • Personal interaction and immediate availability • Good communication between the Virtual Office Manager and the oversight leadership is vital

  11. Funding • The Virtual Office is funded through the assessment provided by the Extension Directors/Administrators • Budget is $150,000 per year for calendar years 2008 and 2009 • CSREES provides in-kind support for the Virtual Office. • 2008 in-kind contribution is approximately $47,500

  14. Virtual Office Manager Responsibilities • Facilitate communication • Develop reports and presentations • Share findings, announcements and recent developments • Maintain national and regional listservs

  15. Virtual Office Manager Responsibilities Continued • Provide updates for website • Monitor FSNE plan approval and review process and questions that arise • Query universities to capture Land-Grant perspective on specific questions • Facilitate completion of contracts

  16. Virtual Office Manager Responsibilities Continued • Hold and disperse funds • Organize meetings and teleconferences • Support the work of workgroups and committees • Serve as contact for CNE Logic Model on-line reporting system hosted by South Dakota State University
