Personal Background and History • Lived a long life (about 90 years) • Born in Abdera, Greece • Wrote over 70 books • Wealthy • Traveled to Egypt, Chaldea, and the Red Sea • His teacher was Leucippus • A lot of history is unknown since he lived such a long time ago (about 460-370 BC) • Known as the “laughing philosopher” Leucippus

  3. Summary of Scientific Research and Interests • Created over 60 works • Worked with astronomy, mathematics, music, physics, biology, medicine, and ethics. • Had many contributions in geometry • Believed in laws of nature, not gods and demons

  4. The Major Discovery Which Helped the Discovery of the Atom • Was the first to have the idea of atoms or “atomos” • Believed atoms had different shapes • Thought there was empty space inside the atomos • Stated that atomos were impassable • Believed atomos could not be created, destroyed, or divided • Thought that these atoms had the same properties as the original object

  5. Reflection and Discussion of How the Discovery Affected the Study and Understanding of the Atom • Before Democritus, nobody even thought of the idea of the atom • Everyone thought there were only 4 elements, earth, air, water, and fire • First person to ever think that matter couldn’t be endlessly divided and the atom was the smallest particle • Sparked idea of the atomic theory
