Turnarounds • Prime opportunity for Injuries • Tight Schedules • Long Hours - 13 days in a row working 12 hour shifts are common. • Inclement weather (rain, darkness, cold, wet, windy, even ice) • Out of area and out of state workers • Lots of workers that have NEVER been in a Refinery (“My last job was flippin burgers…now I’m a Fire Watch.”) • Frayed tempers

  3. How can you do a large T/A with ZERO Injuries? • Is that even possible?

  4. Ideas • Plant the seed – Yes it can be done! Plan for Safety. • Start at the top – Engage the highest level of site and contractor management. • Elevate safety to a core valve. Priorities can change, values don’t change. • Ensure site and contractor safety staffing for all shifts/all hours. • Bring together the Safety Staff (site and contractor) for Team Building. • Engage the workers. If they have a concern, address the concern. • Recognize individual workers for going above and beyond the call of safety.

Ideas • Make PPE, Permits, JHA’s, contact safety phone numbers accessible to all. • If you have a set back, then acknowledge it, communicate it, learn from it and move on. • If you see a trend, regardless of whether or not it has resulted in an injury, hold a safety meeting or even a safety stand-down. • Make the rules known and enforce them. Try to avoid variances and exemptions as much as possible. • Set expectations for audits/observations. • Add as much “fun” as you can. Slogans, coins, stickers, etc.

  7. Team Building • Meeting with Contractor Executives and their safety management to set expectations and get their commitment . • Signed letters • Signed banner • Team Building with Safety Pros from Site and Contractor Safety Pros

  8. Unit Specific T/A Safety Plans

  9. Safety Pro Meeting • Meeting twice/day (days and nights) including weekends/holidays to solely discuss safety issues / concerns / milestones / recognitions, etc. All Safety Pros from the Site and Contractor attend. Site management is invited to sit in. Set expectations: • No name, no blame • You see it, you own it • We are one Safety Team • Provide a handout (Safety Signal) that can be shared with the contractor and employee workforce

  14. Slogans, Stickers, Banners = Fun SAFETY FLASH - WWDD With the T/A underway, please stay focused on Safety and take the time to stop and think: “What would Dave do?” That answer is always “the safe way”. If you don’t know the safe way, ask your Supervisor or Valero contact.
