  4. Exploring the Windows Vista Desktop ACTIVITY 1.1 • Display the Windows Vista desktop. • Move mouse on the desk and notice how the pointer moves in the Windows desktop. Icon Sidebar Start button Taskbar

Mouse Terms ACTIVITY 1.1 • Point • Position the mouse on the desired item. • Click • Quickly tap a button, usually the left button, on the mouse once. • Double-click • Tap the left mouse button twice in quick succession. • Drag • Press and hold down the left mouse button, move the mouse pointer to a specific location, and then release the mouse button.

  6. Mouse Icons ACTIVITY 1.1 The mouse I-beam pointer appears in a program screen where you enter text. The mouse pointer appears as an arrow pointing up and to the left. The mouse pointer becomes a double-headed arrow when performing functions such as resizing a window. The mouse pointer becomes a four-headed arrow to move a selected object left, right, up, or down. The hourglass means “please wait.” The pointer turns into a hand on certain icons and hyperlinks. Clicking will display additional information.

  7. Exploring the Windows Vista Desktop ACTIVITY 1.1 • Move mouse pointer to current time at the far right side of Taskbar—current day and date will display in a pop-up box. • Position mouse pointer on Start button on Taskbar, click left mouse button.

  8. Exploring the Windows Vista Desktop ACTIVITY 1.1 • At Start menu, point to All Programs and click Microsoft Office. • Move mouse pointer to Microsoft Office Word 2007 in expanded menu, click left mouse button.

Exploring the Windows Vista Desktop ACTIVITY 1.1 • Close Microsoft Word by clicking Closebutton in upper right corner of program. • At Windows Vista desktop, position mouse pointer on Recycle Bin icon, then double-clickleft mouse button. • Close Recycle Bin window by clicking Close button in upper right corner of window.

  10. Exploring the Windows Vista Desktop ACTIVITY 1.1 • Shut down Windows Vista by clicking Start button and pointing to the right-pointing arrow next to the lock icon in the right column. • At the pop-up menu, click the Shut Down option.

Opening and Manipulating Windows ACTIVITY 1.2 • At Windows Vista desktop,double-click Recycle Binicon. • Move the window on the desktop by positioning the mouse pointer on the window Title bar (along top of the window), hold down left mouse button, drag the window to a different location on the desktop, and release mouse button.

  12. Opening and Manipulating Windows ACTIVITY 1.2 • Click Start button on Taskbar, then click Computer in the right column at Start menu. • Be sure the Title bar of Recycle Bin window is visible (if not, move Computer window) and click Recycle Bin Title bar.

  13. Opening and Manipulating Windows ACTIVITY 1.2 • Minimize Recycle Bin window to a task button on Taskbar by clicking the Minimize button at right side of Recycle Bin Title bar. • Minimize Computer window to a task button on Taskbar by clicking Minimize button at right side of Title bar.

  18. Exploring the Taskbar ACTIVITY 1.3 • Click Additional Clocks tab located toward top of Date and Time box. • Click OK to close Date and Time dialog box.

  19. Dialog Box Components (1 of 3) ACTIVITY 1.3 • Tabs: Click a dialog box tab and the dialog box options change. • Text box: Type or edit text in a text box. May contain an up or down pointing arrow to allow options. • Drop-down list box: Click the down pointing arrow at the right side of adrop-down list box and alist of choices displays.

Dialog Box Components (2 of 3) ACTIVITY 1.3 • List box: A list box displays a listof options. • Check boxes: If a check boxcontains a mark, the optionis active • Option buttons: Only one optionbutton in a dialog box can beselected (dark or colored) atany time. • Command buttons: Click a command button to execute or cancel a command.

  21. Dialog Box Components (3 of 3) ACTIVITY 1.3 • Slider: Using the mouse, drag a slider to increase or decrease the number, speed, or percentage of the option. • Scroll bar: A scroll bar displays when the information in a window is larger than can fit in the window.

  23. Exploring the Taskbar ACTIVITY 1.3 • Click Auto-hide the taskbar option to insert a check mark. • Click Apply commandbutton. • Click OK button to closeTaskbar and Start MenuProperties dialog box. • Display Taskbar bymoving mouse pointerto bottom of desktop.

  24. Exploring the Taskbar ACTIVITY 1.3 • Right-click on any empty location on Taskbar, then click Properties at shortcut menu. • Click Auto-hide the taskbar option to remove check mark. • Click Apply command button. • Click OK button to close Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box.
