What is the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium? • SBAC is a collection of 29 states that have been working collaboratively to develop next-generation assessments that are aligned to the CCSS and that accurately measure student progress toward college and career readiness. Oregon is a lead state. • www.smarterbalanced.org

Performance Tasks Last 12 weeks of year* • One reading and writing task per year. • Example: • ELA: Read texts on a given theme, synthesize the • perspectives presented, and write an • argumentative essay. • PERFORMANCE • TASKS • Reading • Writing • Math * Time windows may be adjusted based on results from the research agenda and final implementation decisions.

  6. Shifting to SBAC Assessments • •Students will be assessed in 2014-15 using the SBAC • assessments • • They will not be assessed using the statewide writing • process we use now at 11th grade: • - choose one of three prompts • - assessed with ODE 6-trait, 6 point scoring guide

  7. • We must prepare students for a very different type of • performance assessment that will include: • Taking notes while watching a video • Taking notes when reading an article, short story, etc. • Completing constructed response questions • Participating in a small group discussion • Analyzing, synthesizing, evaluating, and integrating • information read in order to write a complete essay

  8. • Not looking to assess surface knowledge or literal comprehension• Performance tasks attempt to tap a deeper understanding on the part of the student • Use reading passages from science, social studies, CTE, Language Arts, health, etc. To prepare for this shift, DD has aligned the district-wide writing assessment to SBAC sample performance tasks (grades 6-9) for this school year.

  9. 9th Grade Performance Task • Packet: combined elements – not the real deal • Student Directions You will watch a video, read a short story and article, review research statistics, answer questions, and write an argumentative essay on the following topic: Your parents are considering having you attend a virtual high school. Write an argumentative essay explaining why you agree or disagree with this idea. Support your claim with evidence from what you have read and viewed. What skills must students have?
