  2. Standard: Ecology 6.e Students know a vital part of an ecosystem is the stability of its producers and decomposers. Objective: Students will begin to learn the vocabulary of seven characteristics of living things, using mnemonic, images and writing their interpretation of new vocabulary on index cards.

  3. Question? • How do you know that something is alive? • What do you consider living things? • What is a mnemonic?

  4. M = Movement – Every living thing moves, even plants.R = Respiration – Getting Energy from food.S = Sensitivity – Responding to things in the surroundings or environment (5-senses Sound (hear), Sight (see), Touch, Taste, and Smell).G = Growth - All things grow.R = Reproduction - Making more living things of the same type.E = Excretion - Getting rid of waste (what goes in must come out).N = Nutrition - Taking in and using food.

Closing… “Game” • Work with a partner • Use the index cards with the picture side up in a game of flash cards to evaluate each other on the new vocabulary of the seven characteristics of living things. • As a whole class students will be able to select a card of their choice and see if another student can guess the vocabulary word and give an example.

  13. Next Step… • Students will use the new vocabulary words throughout the week in preparation for the reading lesson to follow and lab work over the next two weeks and then transition into “What are the characteristics of non-living things”?
