Accelerating English Learning for Recent Immigrants in Newcomer Academies

Newcomer Academies focus on accelerating English instruction for recent immigrant students, enabling them to master both the language and content area courses effectively. By addressing the academic performance gap between English Language Learners and native speakers, we provide hands-on, visual, and auditory resources that are relevant to their learning needs. Our bilingual teachers offer integrated curriculum opportunities in Language Arts and Social Studies, while students enhance their skills through mainstream Math and Science classes, supported by additional assistance from educators.

Newcomer Academy Goals • Accelerate English instruction for recent immigrant students to enable them to learn both the English language and content area courses • Support reduction of the academic performance gap that exists among students who are English Language Learners and native English speakers • Provide hands-on, visual, auditory, and linguistically relevant resources to accelerate instruction • Build district capacity to deliver services through professional development opportunities • Maximize learning by integrating the technology into ESL instruction

  2. Newcomer Academies • 2 Newcomer Academies: SMHS & GNJH • Servicing recent immigrants through accelerated curriculum and instruction • Newcomer Academy teachers are bilingual

  3. SMHS, GN Newcomer Academies • Students spend ½ day in Newcomer Academy • Integrated curriculum: Language Arts and Social Studies • Students are mainstreamed for Math and Science • The teacher assists students in Math and Science
