  1. Exploring Physical Science Chapter 1

  2. Exploring Physical Science Section 1

  3. Bell Ringer • One afternoon you decide to pop some popcorn. You put the bag in the microwave, but after a couple of minutes of cooking, it is clear the popcorn is not popping. Why did this happen? What steps could you take to help locate the problem?

  4. That’s Science • Science is the process of gathering knowledge about the natural world • Starts with a question • Everyday actions involve using your knowledge of science • Making observations and asking questions is what science is all about • There are many branches of science, including physical science

  5. What is Physical Science? • Physical science is the study of matter and energy • Matter is the stuff everything is made of • Energy is the ability to do work • All moving objects have energy • Example – food ( stored energy)

  6. Physical Science • Study of matter and energy • How they relate to each other • Divided into 2 branches • Chemistry • physics

  7. Chemistry is the study of all forms of matter including how matter interacts with other matter • Looks at the structure and properties • How they behave under conditions • Temperature • Pressure • Studies how substances change • A chemical reaction takes place when one substance reacts with another substance to produce a new substance • Chemical reactions take place all the time • Digest food • Start the car • Turn on a flashlight

  8. Physics deals with matter; mostly the way energy affects matter • Study different forms of energy • Motion • Force • Gravity • Electricy • Light • magnetism • heat • Energy can make matter do some interesting things

  9. Physical Science: All Around You • Meteorology • Study of the Earth’s atmosphere, especially in relation to weather and climate • Meteorologist is a person who studies the atmosphere • Common careers are weather forecasts • Tornado chasers • Must have knowledge of physical science • Pressure • Motion • forces

  10. Geology • The study of the origin, history and structure of the Earth • Some geologists are geochemists • Geochemists are scientists who study the chemistry of rocks, minerals and soil • Must have knowledge of physical science • Chemistry • Heat • force

  11. Biology • Physical science and life science are related • Physics and chemistry explain many things that happen in biology • Examples • Get energy from food • Photosynthesis • Respiration

  12. Summary • Science is a process of gathering knowledge about the natural world. • Physical science is the study of matter and energy. • Physical science is divided into the study of physics and chemistry. • Chemistry studies the structure and properties of matter and how matter changes. • Physics looks at energy and the way that energy affects matter. • A knowledge of physical science is important for many areas of science, such as geology and biology.

  13. Exit Slip • On a piece of paper fill in the blanks. • 1. Physical Science include the study of _______ and _______. • 2. The study of interactions of various types of matter is called _____. • 3. The science concerning the study of energy and the way it affects matter is called_____.

  14. Exit Slip • On a piece of paper fill in the blanks. • 1. Physical Science include the study of matter and energy. • 2. The study of interactions of various types of matter is called chemistry. • 3. The science concerning the study of energy and the way it affects matter is called physics.
