  10. 1949 Notes St. Laurent leads the federal Liberal Party to a fourth consecutive majority government. Newfoundland becomes Canada’s tenth province. Canada is a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. NATO’s mission is to contain the spread of communism into western Europe.
