  1. How To Tell If Your Lintels Need Replacing

  2. For any building, its structural integrity and aesthetic appeal are hugely important, and lintels play a significant role in this. Usually made from either concrete or steel, lintels are horizontal in shape and are found directly above windows and doors, providing them with vital support. But as strong and durable as lintels are, they, like many other aspects of a building, they are subject to wear and tear, or a build-up of rust and moisture. Should they start to fail at any point, the safety of a structure can become greatly compromised, as can its functionality, and lintel replacement or repair will likely be necessary.

  3. Spotting lintel deterioration early on means that the problem can be addressed long before extensive damage starts to set in, and to help you determine whether it might be time to repair or replace the lintels in your home or any other building, here’s a brief overview of what to look for: • Cracks appearing above an opening If you can see cracks – either diagonal or vertical – starting to appear above doors or windows, this is a strong indication that the lintels are failing. • Rust stains

  4. Rust staining on the exterior surrounding the lintels, may suggest that the steel has started to corrode. • Bowing or sagging If a visible bow or dip of a lintel can clearly be seen, then this is a sign that the structure has weakened. • Gaps or some separation Gaps or some degree of separation between the surrounding brickwork and the lintel, may highlight some movement or failure in the structure.

  5. If you’re unsure as to whether any of the above issues that you’ve identified are severe enough to warrant further action, then consulting with a professional is strongly advised. Read on to get a better understanding of the process for replacing lintels: • The first step – assessing and planning An experienced masonry contractor will carry out a detailed assessment of the damage to determine how much damage is present, and what the next course of action should be. During the assessment, material choice and load-bearing requirements are carefully considered.

  6. The second step – removing damaged lintel Following on from the assessment, the damaged lintel will need to be removed, and this may include putting temporary supports in place, dismantling masonry to get to the lintel, and removing it without causing any further harm to the structure. • Lastly – installing the new lintel

  7. In this final phase of the process, a new lintel will be installed in accordance with load bearing requirements and any architectural specifications. The appropriate material will be selected, and then during the installation, the lintel will be properly aligned and levelled, and the surrounding masonry rebuilt so that it blends in perfectly with what is already there. Why you shouldn’t tackle lintel repair or replacement yourself

  8. Some aspects of home renovations and repairs can be carried out by DIY enthusiasts, but definitely not something as serious as lintel repair. With their level of expertise and knowledge, qualified and professional masonry contractors can make sure that lintels are replaced in accordance with local building codes and regulations, and that they meet any structural requirements. Neglecting damaged or failing lintels is never wise, and if you spot any of the signs outlined above, you should reach out to a masonry contractor at the earliest opportunity, especially if you want to avoid causing major damage to the structure of the building.
