  2. A Category 5 cable (Cat 5 or Cat 5e) is a twisted pair cable mostly used for computer networks. The Category 5e variant has been widely used since 2001. The cable standard is designed to support speeds of up to 100 MHz and is suitable for most Ethernet over twisted pair applications up to 2.5GBASE-T while more commonly used at 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet) speeds. Other signals, such as telephone and video, can also be carried via Cat 5e patch cables.
