  1. Faith in Jesus that Saves John 2:23 – 3:21

  2. John’s Thesis “…these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.” - John 20:31

  3. Four Types of Faith • Faith without works • Works without faith • Faith that works • No faith, no works

  4. I. Faith Without Works JOHN:2:23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing. 24 But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, 25 and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man.

  5. 3 Elements of Genuine Faith • Knowledge (noticia) information • Belief (assensus) intellectual assent 3. Trust (fiducia) commitment Principle # 1: Miracles do not necessarily produce genuine faith.

  6. The Purposes of Signs • To prove God’s power over other gods. Moses, Elijah, and Daniel and the gods of Egypt, Baal, and Babylon. • To show God’s true prophets -Perfect predictions (Deut. 18:22) -Powerful miracles (Deut. 34:10-12) -Pure doctrine (Deut. 13:1-3)

  7. Faith’s Object is Vital • Having faith is important (subjective) Must have knowledge, belief and trust. 2. The object of that faith is equally important. (objective). Must be reliable The ice skater example; The skater must have faith and the ice must be reliable.

  8. II. Works Without Faith Nicodemas was a Pharisee, a ruler of the Jews, and the teacher of Israel. • A very influential religious and political leader. He was at the top of his game. • He believe that the way to God was by obedience to the Law-written and oral. • He was a very good person outwardly, but his heart was still sinful and not changed. He was very self-righteous.

  9. Why Nicodemus Cannot Enter the Kingdom of God • Human effort cannot save him (vs. 3,4). • Human nature cannot get into heaven (vs. 5-7) • Even physical nature cannot be controlled or predicted (vs. 8,9) Jesus wants to show Nicodemus that there is nothing he can do to enter the kingdom of God. He has to be born of the Spirit

  10. Nicodemus’s 4 Problems • You do not know (vs. 8) His ignorance • You do not understand (vs. 10) His willful blindness 3. You do not accept (vs. 11) His intellectual and spiritual pride • You do not believe (vs. 12) His unbelief

  11. His Only hope--Be Born Again! Different ways to say the same thing • “Born Again” • “Born of water and the Spirit” • “Born of the Spirit” “It is to be made into a new person from the inside out. It is to be cleansed of sin and be given a new heart, a new spirit, and given God’s Holy Spirit to empower that person to live the Christian life (Ezk. 36:25-27)

  12. III. Faith that Works The Son of Man & the Serpent on a pole • The conqueror came to save (Dan. 7:13) • The symbol that can save (Num. 21:8) -Just looking should not be able to save! 3. Messiah was not supposed to die! (Jn. 12:32,33) Principle # 2: God says it, I believe it, I am saved. It doesn’t make sense, but it’s true!

  13. The Mystery of Faith • Faith is a gift of God (Eph. 2:8,9)comes by hearing the Word (Rom.10:17) • Men are also commanded to repent and believe in Christ (Acts 16:31;17:30) If anyone is saved, God gets all the credit, all the glory, not man. If men are damned, they have only themselves to blame, not God.

  14. The Gospel in One Verse • God so loved man that He died for man! • He took man’s place of suffering & shame • True love offers a choice. Without a real choice, there can be no true love. • Without forcing man, God could not have done more than He did in order to save man, but He will not force man to love Him back against man’s will.

  15. Is Hell Fair? • If man rejects God’s love, will forcing him to live in heaven under God’s perfect rule be tolerable and loving for rebellious man? • Will allowing the sinful man to be in heaven and pollute it be fair to the ones who are holy? • Will letting unrepentant and unpaid-for sin or crime go unpunished be fair of God? • Hell is horrible and terrible because it is an offense against an infinitely great and holy God. Sinful man says God is cruel but He is not. Hell is sinful man choosing his own way.

  16. IV. No faith and no works Why Men Reject God • Men love darkness. They love evil because their hearts are evil. Their hearts expresses their evil deeds. Jesus says evil comes from the heart of man. • They hate the light because it shows them their evil deeds and because they are afraid to be exposed to: - humiliation (that they are wrong) -punishment (that they are guilty) -loss (that they must give up the sin they love)

  17. IV. No faith and no works Why Men Reject God • Men love darkness. They love evil because their hearts are evil. Their hearts expresses their evil deeds. Jesus says evil comes from the heart of man. • They hate the light because it shows them their evil deeds and because they are afraid to be exposed to: - humiliation (that they are wrong)  humility -punishment (that they are guilty)  peace -loss (that they must give up the sin they love)  gain

  18. God Has Spoken! What Will You Do? THE ONLY HOPE IS GOD MOVING POWERFULLY TO GIVE NEW LIFE and YOU REPENTING AND BELIEVING IN CHRIST. GOD DOES THIS BY: • Convicting you –showing that you are wrong. You need to repent • Convincing you—Jesus is God, Jesus died for your sins. You need to believe • Converting you—you must turn from sin to God. You need to commitby trusting Him now.

  19. Keep Experiencing the New Life Practicing truth (1 Jn. 1:5-10) • By believing God is • God is Light (Truth and Holiness), there is no darkness (no sin or evil) • Faithful and Just to forgive sin (Jesus paid it all for all time) • By responding in these ways: • Walk in the Light (Live a life of obedience to God, walk with God) • Confess sin nature & and acts of sin and be cleansed (stay humble, stay holy, stay repentant and broken) • Come to the Light in worship, trust and thanksgiving (Q.T. and TAWG regularly) • Seek to bring back those who stray through love and rebuke (love and courage) • Seek to save individual souls
