Focus on Advancement: Troop Planning • Complete Joining Requirements in the 1st Month • Ensure the PLC plans to incorporate appropriate skills as they plan Feb/March Troop meeting agendas • Ensure the SPL incorporates the new scouts in opening ceremonies • Advancement Campout focused on Tenderfoot and 2nd Class requirements for new Scouts. 1st Class or Life requirements for older Scouts • Custom Brown Sea program done during Summer Camp • Utilization of the Target 1st Class report to plan

Advancement Campout • Based on signup sheet for the event build a customized program suited for the Scout attending. • The signup sheet has a column for those needing the 1st class cooking requirements to sign up to be a patrol cook (1st come 1st serve). • Involve the older Scouts to plan and execute Advancement Skills. • Really sell the event to both the Scouts and Parents. Discussion of this campout starts as soon as the new Scouts join the Troop.

Brown Sea Custom Summer Camp Program • A customized program focused on the 1st year Scouts. • Program is run for 2 hours each of 5 mornings during summer camp within the Troop Campsite. • Program is flexible and built using up to date requirement needs based on the Target First Class report. • Program gives focused time on requirements needed to make the rank of 1st class while allowing Scouts to earn 2 merit badges and participate in all Summer Camp activities.

(End Early to allow them to get to 1st Merit Badge on the first day) • T-5 Safe Hiking • T-9 Explain Buddy System • T-6 Flag Etiquette • T-7 Repeat / Explain Oath, Law, Motto, Slogan • T-8 Patrol name, yell, flag • T-10A 30 days after test • T-10B Show improvement of Activities • S-1A Demonstrate how compass works, orient to map, explain map symbols • F-1 Demonstrate finding direction day/night without compass •   S-2 Discuss Leave No Trace • Additional requirements may be completed during open time upon Scout’s request. • Scoutmaster conference and Board of Review available upon Scout’s request

Brown Sea Custom Summer Camp Program Details • Friday 9:00am – 11:00am • F-2 With compass, complete orienteering course of at least 1 mile, measure height/width of tree, pole, ditch, etc.. • Make up Day and any Additional requirements as needed • Additional requirements may be completed during open time upon Scout’s request. • Scoutmaster conference and Board of Review available upon Scout’s request

Results • Planning and executing our Advancement Program allows a Scout to take advantage of the opportunities to advance in rank at a steady pace. • Average Time to Rank • Tenderfoot 4.5 Months • Second Class 9.4 Months • First Class 15.9 Months • This program allows for the older Scouts to get involved and working with the younger Scouts. With the new EDGE requirements for the Life rank, this program will give those Scouts opportunities to earn those requirements.
