  1. CREASE PLAY Crease play is very important, and is a critical part of the game. The last three NCAA Division 1 finals were determined by plays around the crease. The crease is a 9’ radius where the goalkeeper and ONLY the goalkeeper has privileges of the crease. It is the area of the field where defensemen and defensive midfielders have been taught to protect at all costs.

  2. TECHNICAL FOUL SCENARIOS • Fouls while Defensive team in Possession, by the Defense results in a "Turnover". • Fouls while Defensive team in Possession in the crease, by the Offense results in a "Play on". • Offense in the crease, interference with goalkeeper – “play on”; other technical violations FDSW • Fouls while Defensive team in Possession outside the crease, by the Offense results in a "Flag Down".

  3. GOALKEEPER PRIVILEGES • Goalkeepers body may not be checked while any part of their body is in the crease. • Goalkeepers stick may be checked so long as the ball is loose, and that part of the stick that is checked is not within the cylinder of the crease. • Rule 4.19 – Articles 1, 2, and 3

  4. CREASE POSESSION • No defensive player may gain possession of the ball outside the crease and carry the ball back into the crease. • The goalkeeper has four seconds of possession of the ball in the crease.

  5. INADVERTENT WHISTLE Inadvertent whistle while the ball is in the crease, or if the ball is ensnared in the net, is granted to the defense Goal line extended – AP not appropriate here.

  6. INTERFERENCE • Goal Keeper interference on a clear results in a play on.  If the ball is caught we are playing, if not free clear. • IMPORTANT NOTE: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BOUNCE PASS IN HS – MUST BE CAUGHT IN THE AIR, EVEN ON TURF FIELDS – Rule 7.10.2, p. 75: Goalkeeper A’s outlet pass bounces past midfield and the GB picked up by Attack A. Is the Play on over when the ball contacts the ground. RULING: No. Advantage has not been lost. Play continues; ALSO IMPORTANT: GK’S FOLLOW THROUGH MOTION MUST BE NATURAL; IF THEY ARE REACHING TO HAVE THE FOLLOW THROUGH LAND ON THE OTHER PLAYER, COULD BE A SLASH ON THE GK, OR COULD BE A NO CALL IF HIS FOLLOW-THROUGH MOTION IS UNNATURAL.

  7. RUN VS. DIVE • The player is running and he shoots on goal. The ball enters the goal and then he steps in the crease – RULING: GOOD GOAL. • The player is running and he shoots on goal. The ball enters the goal after he steps in the crease – RULING: NO GOAL. • - If shooter dives and lands in the crease, it doesn’t matter whether or not the ball is in the goal first.

  8. MECHANICS • Goal Official has high and the goal. The far side official has the lower part of the shooter. • Goal Official has the Goal Line and the End Line. • If the goal side official slides down to cover the endline, the trail official will now become the goal official until the lead returns to the play. • Trail or Single Side official has the sideline. • Trail will have sideline and crease low opposite lead IF there is a screened or high traffic play on the crease; single side will backup the goal line if the ball goes behind the goal, also has the sideline. • Visible four count. Must release the ball before 4 seconds are up. May not re-enter once he leaves the crease while maintaining possession.
