Before we begin… • Chapter 6 is about geometry… • However, before we get into the geometry portion of chapter 6…We need to spend a little time with converting measurement in the customary and metric systems… • You will see this on the FCAT, Semester Exams, and 8th Grade benchmark tests…so I need to make sure that you know this…

  5. Objective • Students will convert measurements in the customary measurement system

Two Measurement Systems • There are two measurement systems used… • In the United States we use the Customary Measurement System which consists of: • Length – mile, foot, yard, inches • Weight – ton, pound, ounces • Capacity – gallons, quarts, pints, and cups • In other countries they use the Metric Measurement System…We will talk more about that later… • For today’s lesson we will focus on the Customary Measurement System

Converting Measurement • In the customary measurement system the rule for converting measurements is: • If you are going from larger units to smaller units you multiply. • If you are going from smaller units to larger units you divide • In order to be successful here we need to know the relationship of each of the units of measurements… • Let’s see what that looks like…

  8. Units of Length Multiply Miles 5,280 feet Yard 3 feet Feet 12 inches Inches Divide Largest Units Smallest Units

  9. Example 1 • Convert 7 feet into inches • Since we are going from larger to smaller units you multiply here • Since there are 12 inches in a foot you multiply 7 x 12 • Therefore, 7ft = 7 x 12 = 84 inches

  10. Example 2 • Convert 15 feet into yards • Since you are going from smaller to larger units you divide • There are 3 feet in a yard • Therefore, 15 feet = 15  3 = 5 yards

  13. Example 1 • Convert 12400 lb to tons • Since you are going from smaller to larger units you divide • There are 2,000 lb in a ton • Therefore, 12400 lb = 12400  2000 = 6.2 T

  14. Example 2 • Convert 8.5 lb to ounces • Since you are going from larger to smaller units you multiply • There are 16 ounces to a pound • Therefore, 8.5 lb = 8.5 x 16 = 136 ounces

  15. Your Turn • In the notes section of your notebook write and convert the following: • 3.75 lb = ___________oz • 3.5 T = ___________lb • 150 oz = ___________lb

  17. Example 1 • Convert 12 pints to cups • Since you are going from larger to smaller units you multiply • There are 2 cups in each pint • Therefore, 12 pints = 12 x 2 = 24 cups

  18. Example 2 • Convert 15 quarts to gallons • Since you are going from smaller to larger units you divide • There are 4 quarts to a gallon • Therefore, 15 quarts = 15  4 = 3.75 gallons

Comments • Sometimes you have to convert from the largest to the smallest unit or vice versa… • In that instance you have to use multiple steps… Example: Convert 3 gallons to pints • Convert from gallons to quarts and then convert from quarts to pints 3 g = 3 x 4 = 12 q = 12 x 2 = 24 pt So…3 gallons = 24 pints
