  1. TAFE LINK COURSES 2008–Rossmoyne SHS These courses are designed to assist students who do not want to do TEE and see TAFE as their best option. They are a great alternative for students entering year 11. It’s worth noting that Universities will now accept students with a Certificate 4 or Diploma in a similar area of study.

  2. School Subjects Students will complete 4 subjects at school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. • English 1A / 1B • Career and Enterprise 1A / 1B • Integrated Science 1A / 1B • Maths 1B /1C. TAFE and Work Placements make up the other 2 needed for Graduation.

  3. There are 4 Courses • Profile Hours • School Apprentice Link – SAL • School Based Traineeships – SBT • School Based Apprenticeships – SBA

  4. PROFILE • Usually at Challenger Fremantle and Henderson / Central TAFE Perth and Leederville. • One day at TAFE • Second day in a work placement • 2008 - Visage/Hairdressing - Sport and Recreation - Plant Processing - Design Fundamentals TAFE days are Thursday /Friday

  5. School Apprenticeship Link - SAL COMPETITIVE – students need to put applications in by August 2008. Year 11 is a general “taster” of an area with year 12 more specific. • AUTOMOTIVE-heavy & light • BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION • FOOD TRADES • HORTICULTURE • METALS & ENGINEERING • PERSONAL SERVICES – hair/ beauty • FURNITURE

  6. School Apprenticeship Link - SAL TAFE decides who is accepted into these courses. They will look at school records especially attendance and behaviour. Some academic standards are also needed. Students are required to sit interviews at school (preferably with a parent) before applications are sent in. Unsuccessful students will be counselled back into “normal” school courses. 7. SCHOOL BASED TRAINEESHIPS – SBT Only 3 in 2008 IT - WA Police Force Human Resources - Challenger TAFE Cabinet Making – Fremantle Furniture Factory. Lengthy application process which can take up to 3 months. Students are paid ( $95/day) and are fast tracked into employment with their trainer at the end of year 12. Hard to get but fantastic if you are in one

  8. SBT (continued) These can be for the more academic students with some students in 2008 going from 4 TEE subjects to a preferred TAFE pathway. Students normally complete a Cert 2/3 over year 11 & 12 and Workplace Learning as they go. PAID.

  9. SCHOOL BASED APPRENTICESHIPS- SBA The Engineering Studies course forms part of the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and is designed to facilitate the achievement of Technology and Enterprise, Science, Mathematics and Society and Environment Learning Area outcomes • Successful students in year 11 can move to this in year 12 if offered a place. • Contracted to an employer looking for an apprentice (and paid) • Two days per week – TAFE and Workplace • Minimum 8 hours work per week

  10. SBA (continued) • Students complete a Cert 2 /3. • At the end of year 12 (or during it) they can take up full time apprenticeships and have their time reduced as a proportion of the training they have already done. • 2008 – Plant Processing (oil and gas), Automotive, Building and Construction, Horticulture

  11. COURSES AVAILABLE Engineering COS was introduced to further expand the high level of courses already offered. • There is a huge number of areas available with a current emphasis on trades (Except plumbing and electrical). It does vary from year to year on what TAFE can offer the schools. • Not all students will be successful as we need to ensure the students we send out representing us will not spoil the chances of future students. • The aim is to give TAFE bound students a head start and to make Senior Schoolmore relevant.

  12. HOW TO APPLY • MAKE SURE YOU ENROL IN 6 SUBJECTS WHEN YOU DO YOUR YEAR 11 SUBJECT SELECTIONS. • If you get into a TAFE Link course we will change your timetable. IF NOT you still have the subjects you want. • Discuss this thoroughly as a family then come and see Mr Lucas. • Fill in Application forms. • If successful sign up with TAFE and sign a school behaviour contract.

  13. Lets have a look at some of our students in the workplace. We have built wonderful relationships with the business sector over the years and that is something we want you to maintain.

  14. Horticulture is a growth industry and provides a range of outdoors activities with many employment opportunities.

  15. TAFE has access to many top hotels, restaurants, pastry shops etc. for students to learn first hand what Hospitality involves.

  16. Safety is taught at TAFE and school and applied at work. Students have TAFE and School work placements for a minimum of 110 – 240 hours of training.

  17. We’re all so happy! • Work placements are a highlight for all concerned AND count as a subject for Graduation

  18. Can I help you ? Choose your area carefully and it will be a rewarding and interesting experience.

  19. They told me one barrow! • We have a reputation and a good one too. • We set high standards just like you. • You are representing all the students at Rossmoyne so doing the right thing is a given.

  20. It’s not only trades ! Your placement is for the year – possibly two so think carefully!

  21. They are mine – Honest! A lot of students are mobile during their placements. You work normal hours – not school hours.

  22. I do work here! • Trainees are placed two days a week and are paid. • These are harder to get but are fantastic career pathways.

  23. Missed a bit ! Many students who do well in their placements are offered full time apprenticeships and leave school during the course

  24. Better than a bought one! Real work Real duties Real responsibilities Real rewards

  25. There was one in there ! Real work, real training, real fun. Work with experienced trainers in their world.

  26. I’m good at this! • TAFE offers a different learning environment that is practical and relevant. • They only want students who are interested in succeeding.

  27. I ate the rest ! • TAFE is Industry driven so your qualification is really valuable. • They know where the work is and how to get there.

  28. TAFE offers great training . • Lecturers are usually ex-tradies who know what is required to be successful. They will pass this on to you.

  29. Dressed for the job! • You will be at work every week in some cases or for “blocks” of time during the year. • Dress, behaviour, punctuality etc are a must to complete the course.

  30. Now it will float! • You will learn skills you can use for life. • The trick is to find a job you like and get paid for it. • REMEMBER– we only want motivated students who will do the right thing at school, TAFE and at work.

  31. Where will it all end? • We provide the practical tasks that get the students out of their seats and into the world of work. • We expose the students to real life experiences. • They get to play with some really, really fun things, learn new skills, get paid in some circumstances, are put under pressure and learn to work in a team.

  32. WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T LIKE THE COURSE ? • You can change back to 6 “normal” subjects during Term 1. • You can complete Year 11 in the TAFE Link group then swap over to 6 subjects at school for Year 12. • Your school Graduation is still our main concern.
