  1. The Kingdom’s Fall Chapter 17

  2. 2 Kings 25:8–12 (TNIV, pp. 193-194) 8 On the seventh day of the fifth month, in the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard, an official of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. 9 He set fire to the temple of the Lord, the royal palace and all the houses of Jerusalem. Every important building he burned down.

  3. 2 Kings 25:8–12 (TNIV, pp. 193-194) 10 The whole Babylonian army under the commander of the imperial guard broke down the walls around Jerusalem. 11Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard carried into exile the people who remained in the city, along with the rest of the populace and those who had deserted to the king of Babylon. 12 But the commander left behind some of the poorest people of the land to work the vineyards and fields.

  5. Ezekiel 36:22-38 The Story, p. 203 Out of the ashes – God’s promise to restore the broken

  6. Ezekiel 36:22–38 (TNIV, p. 203) 22 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake, house of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you have gone. 23 I will show the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy through you before their eyes.

  7. Ezekiel 36:22–38 (TNIV, p. 203) 24 “ ‘For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

  8. Ezekiel 36:22–38 (TNIV, p. 203) 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. 28 Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God. 29 I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will call for the grain and make it plentiful and will not bring famine upon you. 30 I will increase the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field, so that you will no longer suffer disgrace among the nations because of famine.

  9. Ezekiel 36:22–38 (TNIV, p. 203) 31 Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices. 32 I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign Lord. Be ashamed and disgraced for your conduct, house of Israel! 33 “ ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I cleanse you from all your sins, I will resettle your towns, and the ruins will be rebuilt.

  10. Ezekiel 36:22–38 (TNIV, p. 203) 34 The desolate land will be cultivated instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass through it. 35 They will say, “This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden; the cities that were lying in ruins, desolate and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited.” 36 Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the Lord have rebuilt what was destroyed and have replanted what was desolate. I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.’

  11. Ezekiel 36:22–38 (TNIV, p. 203) 37 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Once again I will yield to the plea of the house of Israel and do this for them: I will make their people as numerous as sheep, 38 as numerous as the flocks for offerings at Jerusalem during her appointed festivals. So will the ruined cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

  12. In the midst of the heartbreak and devastation of our sin, God announces his plan of restoration, renewal, forgiveness, and blessing.

  13. God’s saving grace displays his holiness

  14. Ezekiel 36:22–38 (TNIV, p. 203) 22 I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name…23 I will show the holiness of my great name…Then the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy through you before their eyes.

  15. “Holy/Holiness” • קָדַשׁ (qādash) – be holy, set apart, to dedicate for use before God

  16. Israel’s Purpose Do not bring shame on my holy name, for I will display my holiness among the people of Israel. I am the Lord who makes you holy, (Leviticus 22:32 NLT).

  17. Israel’s Sin Shames God I will show how holy my great name is—the name on which you brought shame among the nations, (Ezekiel 36:23 NLT)

  18. Who we are, what we say, how we act as God’s people defines God to the world around us.

  19. Our Sin Discredits God and Shames Us 31Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices. 32 I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign Lord. Be ashamed and disgraced for your conduct, house of Israel! (Ezekiel 36:31-32)

  20. Rediscovering Compunction “Sometimes our hearts are so awakened, have such strong apprehensions of the Divine Presence, are so full of deep compunction for our sins, that we cannot confess them in any language but that of tears,” (Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life, by William Law).

  21. Created for His Glory Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us,” (Genesis 1:26 NLT)

  22. Chosen for His Glory …we were chosen so that we would bring praise to God’s glory, (Ephesians 1:12 NCV).

  23. God will end our exile

  24. Ezekiel 36:24 (TNIV, p. 203) For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land.

  25. “…three deep cravings of the self, three great expressions of man’s restlessness…The first is the craving which makes him a pilgrim and wanderer. It is the longing to go out from his normal world in search of a lost home, a “better country,” (Evelyn Underhill, Mysticism)

  26. There has to be something more.

  27. Ephesians 2:13 (NLT) But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.

  28. God will completely cleanse us

  29. Ezekiel 36:25 (TNIV, p. 203) I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols.

  30. The Truth about Our Condition It is your evil that has separated you from your God. Your sins cause him to turn away from you, so he does not hear you, Isaiah (59:2 NCV).

  31. Our Useless Efforts Even if you wash with lye and use a great amount of soap, the stain of your sin is still in front of Me. This is the Lord God’s declaration, (Jeremiah 2:22 HCSB).

  32. Confession that Cleanses But if we confess our sins, he will forgive our sins, because we can trust God to do what is right. He will cleanse us from all the wrongs we have done, (1 John 1:9 NCV) . • “Confess” - to acknowledge a fact publicly, often in reference to previous bad behavior

  33. Breakthrough! • ...a breakthrough to community. The more isolated a person is, the more destructive will be the power of sin over him • ...a breakthrough to the cross. Confession in the presence of a brother is the profoundest kind of humiliation • ...a breakthrough to new life. Where sin is hated, admitted and forgiven, there the break with the past is made. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together

  34. God will totally renew us

  35. Ezekiel 36:26 (TNIV, p. 203) I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

  36. Helpless to Heal Ourselves When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners, (Romans 5:6 NLT).

  37. Work Only God Can Do • Give you a new heart • Put a new spirit in you • Remove your heart of stone • Give you a heart of flesh

  38. The Heart of Flesh • Sensitive to the Priorities of God • Sensitive to the Needs of Others • Sensitive to the Presence of Sin • Sensitive to Lostness of Others • Sensitive to the Leading of the Holy Spirit

  39. God will gives us his spirit

  40. Ezekiel 36:27 (TNIV, p. 203) And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

  41. Spirit that Assures We know that we live in God and he lives in us, because he gave us his Spirit, (1 John 4:13 NCV).

  42. Spirit that Transforms So all of us…reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image, (2 Corinthians 3:18 NLT).

  43. Spirit that Empowers For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him, (Philippians 2:13 NLT) .
