So what is migration?... Definition: Migration – the movement of people to live in a different place. Migration can take place within a country (internal migration) or between countries (international migration). It can have positive effects and negative effects. In some cases migration is needed and in others it needs to be controlled.

What makes people move in the first place? There are many reasons why people move from their homes to somewhere new. They can usually be split into two groups: Push Factors and Pull Factors.
Push factors force people out of the area in which they live and Pull factors attract people into a new area to live Tasks: 1] With the person sitting next to you make a table listing push and pull factors. What are the effects of migration? Migration can have many effects on a number of people and groups. There can be negative and positive effects. Create two spider diagrams showing the advantages in one and the disadvantages in the other that arise due to migration both. Use the information in Fig. 5 (pg. 117) to help you. Extension: Colour code you spider diagram with advantages and disadvantages ‘For the host country’ in one colour, ‘For the losing country’ in another and ‘For the migrant and family’ in a third colour.
