  1. DUNKIRK. War film.

  2. BACKGROUND… • 2017 war film. • Written, directed and produced by Christopher Nolan. • The film depicts the Dunkirk evacuation of World War II. • Starring well known names such as, Fionn Whitehead, Harry Styles, and Cillian Murphy. • The film was produced by Warner Brothers.

  3. What can we expect to see… • The opening scene shows us young males in army uniform - we can assume that the characters and the action from opening scene will base the rest of the film. • As the movie is set in the context of WW2, the narrative of the film is already set up, as it is in line with the real outcome in 1945.

  4. How is the genre of the film set up? • The idea of propaganda is also set up. • The fliers that fly down in the first scene are a type of propaganda which shows the conflict and divide. • Every few moments there is a black screen which has white writing on it - describing the situation that the soldiers are faced with - the contrast from the action scenes to that is very effective • War films tend to feature a number of action/combat scenes. • Mise en scene - the characters costumes are typical army uniforms which represent the genre. They wear dark green uniforms, with crash helmets, boots and they carry bags and guns.

  5. Target audience… •14 - 50 years old •There are numerous scenes of death and violence which could be inappropriate for younger viewers - however the stories are real and historical and so don’t just depict meaningless violence.

  6. Characters? • We are introduced to six soldiers - we see them in the first scene from the back as they walk down the street. • We d o n ’ t g e t i n d i v i d u a l introductions which gives the more general idea of soldiers and armies. • The soldiers are depicted as being quite desperate - for example we see one soldier desperately trying to get some water to drink out of a hosepipe.
