Richard Dyer believed that a ‘star’ is an image and not actually a real person. Icons and celebrities are constructed for financial gain and are built to fit a specific target audience. What is dyer’s star image theory?
There are three main features that make a star… • The star as a construction through all types of media - how they are shown/their personalities • The star as a commodity through their controlled image - record labels control their image to attract the target audience • The star as an ideology by representing themes and ideas that they believe in - for example the spice girls represent power and friendship
“The star must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer.” The star must be someone to look up to and aspire to be like but also someone the audience can relate to and see as ‘normal’. “The star must be simultaneously present and absent for the consumer.” The star must be someone we know all about but not enough to get sick of them. If we are left wanting to see more we listen to their music, follow their social media, buy their merchandise, buy tickets to their shows, etc. WE BUY THE ARTIST NOT THE ALBUM. The star image is based upon these two paradoxes…
