9 Energy conservation considerations

This guide provides essential energy conservation considerations for students preparing electrical plans. Emphasizing energy efficiency in home and building design, it outlines effective steps that can be taken to achieve significant energy savings. Key strategies include minimizing electrical outlets on exterior walls, ensuring proper ventilation with backdraft dampers, utilizing timed switches for exhaust fans, selecting energy-efficient appliances, and using insulating techniques around lighting fixtures. By implementing these practices, one can enhance energy performance and sustainability in building projects.

  1. 9 Energy conservation considerations ACT-ADDII-1: Students will prepare electrical plans • a) Understand general codes related to electrical plans.

  2. Energy conservation • Energy efficiency is extremely important In home and building design. Many steps can be taken to contribute to energy savings.

  3. Step 1 • Keep electrical outlets and panels to a minimum on exterior walls. This prevents compromising the insulating value of the wall

  4. Step 2 • Fans or anything else exhausting air from the building should be provided with a back draft or dampers to limit air leaking

  5. Step 3 • Timed switches or humidistats should be installed on exhaust fans to prevent unnecessary operation

  6. Step 4 • Wires in exterior walls should be run along the bottom on the studs at the bottom plate. Cut a “V” groove into the stud bottoms as they are delivered to prepare

  7. Step 5 • Select energy-efficient appliances

  8. Step 6 • Use fluorescent lights, which save energy

  9. Step 7 • Fully insulate above and around recessed light fixtures

  10. Step 8 • Caulk and seal around all light and convenience outlets

  11. Step 9 • Used recessed lights that are IC (Insulation Cover) rated, which allow you to insulate around and over the light
