  2. Answer the following in your Word journal for the class • Why do you feel that some websites are good? • Why do you feel that some websites are not so good? • Check with classmates – do they agree/disagree with you, and why? • Who is the target audience for a particular site? • How might website quality be judged differently across different audiences? • Are there some qualities of websites that all audiences would agree are good? What are these qualities?

  3. Expert opinions • Visit 2 of the following websites: • WWW Cyberguide Ratings for Web Site Design (PDF) • Jakob Nielsen: Ten Usability Heuristics • AskTOG: First Principles of Interaction Design • WebPagesThatSuck.com • http://www.christophermerrill.com/web_design_dos.htm • http://www.christophermerrill.com/top_10_web_design_mistakes.htm

  4. In groups of 3-4 • Working in your groups, share and discuss the merits and problems of two sites. • One site should be a clear example of good design and one an example of poor design. • Discuss specific traits that could be used to evaluate sites • Write your final traits down in your Word doc. Make sure that you identify your group members. • Once you reach consensus on the traits, decide on a numeric scale to use for judging how well a website rates for each of the traits. • Brainstorm & write down a list of descriptors that define major point values on the numeric scale. What does a high score, a low score look like?
