  2. Aluminum-copper alloys (2xxx series) may be solution treated for optimum mechanical properties. Precipitation hardening may also be used, but it leads to a significant loss of elongation.

  3. Aluminum alloys are designated by various systems, which include the Aluminum Association numbering system.

  4. Temper designations are used to indicate the cold-worked or heat-treated condition of aluminum alloys.

  5. Aluminum-manganese (3xxx series) alloys may be heavily strain hardened during cold working.

  6. Silicon may be added to aluminum in significant quantities up to 12% Si.

  7. Alloy 6061-T6 is strengthened by magnesium silicide precipitation.

  8. Aluminum is joined by welding, brazing, soldering, mechanical fastening, and adhesive bonding.
