Reincarnation • Reincarnation: rebirth of the soul in another bodily form • Keep working toward moksha through several lifetimes • Obey the laws of karma & dharma • Karma: all actions in life affect your fate in the next life • Dharma: religious & moral duties of an individual • Humans or animals (move up and out of the caste system)

The Caste System • Brought to area by ancient Aryans • Organized Society (L.J.H.S.) • Reflected social & economic roles • Became intertwined in with Hindu beliefs • Social Hierarchy: (5 major castes) • Brahmins: Priests • Kshatriyas: Rulers & Warriors • Vaishyas: Merchants and Craftsman • Sudras: Laborers • Outcastes/Untouchables/Dalits Notice the gap

Impact of Caste System • Born into your caste • Can’t change caste until reincarnation • Determined jobs you could hold • Determined who you could marry (arranged marriages) • Who you can eat with • What you eat • Where you live • What you wear • Still effects life in India, yet, laws have weakened it considerably, especially in cities

Buddhism • Began in India • Founder: Siddhartha Gautama (566 B.C.) • Born into elite high caste Hindu family • Mom’s vision • Father’s reaction • Gautama’s disobediance • A sick person, an old person, a dead body, and a wandering holy man • Suffering new & scary, need to escape • Wandered, sought guidance, meditated, & fasted (Socrates Anyone?) • 48 days meditating under a tree • Arose as the Buddha, “Enlightened One”

Four Noble Truths • All life is full of suffering, pain, and sorrow. • The cause of suffering is the desire for things that are really illusions, such as riches, power, and long life. • The only cure for suffering is to overcome desire. • The way to overcome desire is to follow the Eightfold Path
