Objectives • Orient to Career Clusters – Career Pathways • Orient to GPS and Pathways • Review all Career Pathways in Ag Ed • Review intro course – core curriculum for Ag Ed • Review courses in the sequence for each pathway • Help teachers be proactive in planning for GPS and Pathways • Prepare a 5 year rotation of course offerings • Oriented teachers to GeorgiaStandards.org • Oriented teachers to Careerclusters.org • Deal with courses not in a pathway • Help you determine pathways to offer • Answer all your questions – well, most of them at least.
What’s New in Curriculum? • QCC Conversion to GPS • Career Clusters - Pathways
The What and Why of Career Clusters - Pathways See www.careercluster.org • A grouping of related careers • To prepare today's students for tomorrow • To help students achieve in challenging subjects • Career clusters link what students learn in school with the knowledge and skills they need for success in college and careers. • The connection to future goals motivates students to work harder and enroll in more rigorous courses. • Career clusters identify pathways from secondary school to two- and four-year colleges, graduate school, and the workplace.
Georgia Curriculum Development • Three course sequence developed for each pathway • Standards and elements developed for each course
Courses in Pathways • Agriscience • Basic Agricultural Science and Technology • Plant Science Biotechnology • Animal Science Biotechnology • Agricultural Mechanics (DRAFT) • Ag. Mechanics Tech I • Ag. Mechanics Tech II • Ag. Mechanics Tech III • Agribusiness Management (DRAFT) • Ag Leadership and Program Development • Agricultural Business and Management • Cooperative Sales and Marketing I • Horticulture • General Horticulture • Floriculture Production and Management • Nursery and Landscape • Animal Science (DRAFT) • Basic Agricultural Science and Technology • Agricultural Animal Production and Management • Animal Science and Biotechnology • Forestry/Natural Resources • Forestry Science I • Wildlife Management • Natural Resources Management
What’s Good about GPS and Pathways? • Complete review of curriculum • Education career plans • Correlation with academic standards • Focus on core – but keep supplemental courses
Plans for Phase III • Pathways • Animal Science • Agricultural Mechanics • Agribusiness Management • Teams • Timeline • Development in 2007- 2008 • Implemented in 2008 - 2009
Student Population Definitions • Participant – a secondary student enrolled in an Ag Ed class • Concentrator – a student who earns 4 or more units in CTEA courses, of which three are in an area of concentration • Completer – a student who completes a series of 3 or more prescribed courses in a pathway
What’s Next? • End of pathway testing • Certificates for completers • Articulation with post-secondary schools
How many pathways should a teacher or program offer? • One teacher department? • Two teacher department with Young Farmer teacher? • Multi-teacher department?
Need for a Common Ag Ed Course • Agricultural Science and Technology • The core curriculum of Ag Ed • The course would not be a pre-requisite • The course would be a course in all pathways
Notes & Questions • Each student will be counseled and have a career plan • One-person Ag Ed programs have to plan carefully so students can complete a pathway and still offer courses students need • The graduation rule and career clusters • What happens if a program has no completers? • Volume of course content • What happens to courses not in a pathway? • How can a teacher account for ‘local curriculum needs’? • How about Middle School GPS/QCC? • What is a Roll-Out program? • Lesson plan development plans • How do I get on a curriculum committee?
Phase III • Work sessions for Phase III are scheduled from 8 am to 4 pm at Houston County High School in Warner Robins. • August 25, 2007 (Facilitators Only) • September 29, 2007 • October 20, 2007 • November 17, 2007 • December 8, 2007 • January 5, 2008 • Honorarium
