Healthy Fitness Zone (HFZ) • Criterion-referenced standards established by The Cooper Institute, which are used to evaluate fitness performance. • Represent a level of fitness that offers a degree of protection against diseases resulting from physical inactivity. • For the PFT, the CDE considers students who exceed the HFZ (i.e., very lean) for body composition as meeting the HFZ.

  9. Are districts required to send parents/ guardians their students’ score reports? • No. Districts are not required to send parents/guardians their students’ score reports. • Districts are required to provide individual students with their test results. • Also, districts are required to include the PFT results in the students’ cumulative records or files.

  10. Can students be excused from the PFT? • No. All students in grades five, seven, and nine are required to participate in the PFT, including students not enrolled in physical education during the PFT administration window and students with disabilities. • Students with disabilities may be limited in their ability to participate in all six tests. • Students with disabilities shall be tested in each fitness component included in the PFT unless exempt by the students individualized education program (IEP) or Section 504 plan (California Code of Regulations, Title 5, Section 1041 and 1047).

  11. Aerobic Capacity • Preparation, Practice, Warm Up, Cool Down • One mile run - Code 59 minutes and 59 seconds if student does not complete • PACER-allowed two-form breaks (fail to touch the line before the beep) • See reference guide for conversion to one-mile run time

  12. Body Composition • Privacy • BMI - appropriateness of student’s weight relative to his/her height

  13. Abdominal Strength and Endurance • Curl-Up – practice, teach correct form • maximum of 75 • Use cadence CD to assure rhythmic and continuous • allowed two-form breaks

  14. Trunk Extensor Strength & Flexibility • Trunk Lift • Maximum of 12 inches • Slow lift assures safety • 2 trials, highest is recorded

  15. Upper Body Strength & Endurance • 90o Push-Up – practice, teach correct form • Cadence CD for pace • Allowed two form breaks

  16. Flexibility • Back-Saver Sit and Reach • Student keeps both hands along the scale of the box and holds for at least 1 sec. • Score to the nearest inch; 12 inch max • Left and right recorded separately

  17. Flexibility • Shoulder Stretch • Fingertips must touch together • Left and right recorded separately

  21. 2014 PFT Timeline • February – May: PFT Window • February 4 – 11: Site data collection sheets sent both electronically and via hard copy to PE rep • May 16: All site data collection sheets due • Return requests for pre-populated FitnessGram certificates with your results; these will be sent out in the order received.
