  1. E S P A Ñ O L St. Thomas More Middle School Teacher: Sra. Ilka Cordova icordova@st-thomasmore.org “Hola”, Hi Parents**: It is my pleasure to have your child as my student. I am a native-Spanish teacher who cares and enjoys working with students, originally from Panama City, Republic of Panama (Central America). I have a Masters degree in Foreign Language -Spanish from West Virginia University and I have been teaching Spanish for the past seven years. As a new teacher I am in the process to update the Spanish website, where I will be posting announcements, assignments, quizzes and tests due dates, and other resources to be used in this course. However, today, I would like you to know the most important information related to the course, your child responsibilities, classroom rules and procedures: Content: Interactive course that will help your child develop his/her communicative proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing of the Spanish language. They will also learn varios aspects of the Hispanic culture and history.. Textbook: Realidades Spanish 1 or 2. The textbook will be online. Workbooks: Realidades Core Practice/Guided Practice and Realidades Communication. Students will have a shelf in the room to leave their workbooks if not needed to complete a homework or to study. Assessment: Every grade will cover specific units of the textbook based on the Spanish level and program chosen. Schedules of units by class, assignments and due dates will be posted in the website later (approximately in a week). You will be informed when it is time and it is ready to use. Homework (15%): includes but not limited to, workbooks pages, writing, interviews and research used to reinforce Spanish material given. Class-work (15%): practices of Spanish class given to be done in the classroom and the Lab-room. Projects (20%): every unit will have a project to start in the classroom and may be finished at home. Quizzes (20%): every unit will have a vocabulary and a grammar quiz. It is important for every student to study on a daily basis the language and information learned in class. Quizzes will be given on a regular basis based on vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking and culture. Tests (30%): every unit will have a test. Only 8th graders will have a Mid-term and a Final test. LATE homework, class-work and projects will be received as late, deducting 10% for every late day and no later than 5 calendar days after its due date.

  2. 3/3 Grading: This class will follow the same grading scale of STM’s school. (Ref. Parent-Student Handbook) • Materials • one yellow folder to insert worksheets, projects, graded quizzes and tests. • one notebook for classroom notes and practices • pencils • one set of headphones ($20.00) for 6th graders. 7th and 8th graders will use the same as their previous year. Optional: a Spanish-English dictionary, a USB to save digital files, index cards 3”x5”. CONDUCT You will be conducted in accordance with the school policies as contained in the STM Parent-Student Handbook The following behaviors, among others, will NOT be accepted in the Spanish classroom: Being disrespectful: Mistreating a classmate or a teacher (physically or verbally-Cussing or with disrespectful words/phrases). Chewing gum. Being disruptive:Talking, whistling or making weird noises while others talk. Standing from your desk without authorization of the teacher Being off-task: Not doing the work assigned or not doing work at all. Sleeping. ALL STUDENTS MUST BE READY TO WORK AND RECEIVE INSTRUCTION EVERYDAY, WITH THEIR WORK ASSIGNED, THE MATERIALS NEEDED AND THE UNIFORM PROPERLY USED. • FAITH PRACTICE • In our classroom, we will learn prayers, songs, and other Catholic related material. • “Reaching minds + Touching Hearts + Shaping Soals” **In order to communicate better and faster with you, please complete the information below and send it back with your child.
