Definition • Autism Spectrum Disorder: 5 conditions that all involve varying degrees of problems with communication skills, social interactions, and repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior • Autism • Asperger Syndrome • Rett Syndrome • Childhood Disintegrative Disorder • Pervasive Developmental Disorder not otherwise Specified

  3. Autism • Extreme Social Withdrawal • Impairment in Communication • Stereotyped Movements • Resistance to Change • Unusual Responses to Sensory Experiences • Apparent by age 3

  4. Asperger Syndrome • Displays the characteristics of a milder form of Autism • Difficulties in Social Interactions

  5. Prevalence • 0.6% of the population has autism spectrum disorder • 0.27% of students age 6-17 are identified as autistic and receive special education • The prevalence has increased over the last 30-40 years • Higher prevalence in males 3:1 or 4:1 (except Rett Syndrome)

  6. Causes • Neurological • Disorder of neural networks • Mirror Neurons • Genetic • There is scientific evidence to suggest autism is hereditary • Myths • Not caused by refrigerator moms or vaccines

  7. Identification • There is no universally used diagnostic test • Autism is relatively easy to diagnose • Autistic Regression • The child appears to progress normally until 16-24 months and then begins to regress in behavior
