  3. Portrayals of Love I feel that Titanic and P.S. I Love you had a more Passionate approach to love. Emotions, feelings and desires had a more critical role in the portrayal of love in these films. The Sound of Music, Kate & Leopold and It’s a Wonderful Life, approached love in a more compassionate or traditional way.

  4. Portrayals of Love Cont. I felt it was wise to choose a good mix of films to show how various styles are approached over time. The selections represent a good mix of passionate and compassionate approaches to love.

  5. Realistic or Not? The Sound of Music, Kate & Leopold, and possibly It’s a Wonderful life represent what may actually occur while fostering a loving relationship. With the exception of some sensationalizing for the sake of Hollywood these films are the “closest to love”. Titanic and P.S. I Love You seem at first glance to be realistic but they feel forced and too charged with artificial emotion to resemble any form of realistic love.

  6. Realistic or Not? Cont. The characters in the first three films seem approachable and genuine. I feel their emotions and empathize with their feelings. It sells me on the fact that they are genuine and their love is real. I especially liked the character of Maria in The Sound of Musicand Leopold in Kate and Leopold. The last two films seemed forced or artificial. Although there are some powerful moments in these films the artificial veneer cheapens the love and weakens the sale.

  7. Dangers of Love in Film The portrayal of love in any media should be taken with a grain of salt, especially in film. Film often shows an unrealistic view of love. This view tends to be a quick fatuous type of love or a meaningless sex based relationship that does not last. Although many of Hollywood's films have been successful in defining love(The Sound of Music), too many show love and relationships on a superficial level. True love takes intimacy, commitment, time and patience. Unless these qualities are accurately portrayed in film it is best to accept them as entertainment only.
