  2. What is Depression? • Depression is a chemical imbalance in brain • Thoughts can be dangerous and life threatening. • Depression is not an obvious illness • It is difficult to diagnose immediately. • Depression is an uncontrollable mental illness.

  3. What are the causes of depression? • Death of a loved one • Loss of employment • Divorce/ Marital problems • Unforeseen life events • Health problems • Abuse • Life changes • Trouble with personal or family relationships

  4. Who does depression affect? • Men and women in their 20’s • Men and women aging from 45-64 • People affected by major life changes • Pregnant women • Women who have just given birth • People of all ethnicities

  5. Feelings of depression • Uncontrollable thoughts • Negative self image of ones’ self • Thoughts of self harm • Thoughts of suicide • Sad emotions • Crying for no reason • Feelings to want to give up

  6. Why is understanding Depression important? • People are uneducated about warning signs. • Patients are misunderstood and judged harshly. • Common misconception that depression is a choice. • Being informed allows for help to • be given to those suffering.

  7. Problems concerning depression • Unawareness that it is a condition • Unaware that treatment options available • Patients are ashamed about their feelings. • Individuals deal with depression independently • Camouflage feelings by acting happy • People take offense to others actions

  8. What are the treatments for Depression? • Antidepressants: Amedical prescription • Psychotherapy: Talk with a therapist • Electroconvulsive Therapy: Last resort option • Antidepressants and psychotherapy are the best • treatment options

  9. What happens if Depression is left Untreated? • Reaction to negative thoughts are exercised • Ruined relationships • Harmful acts to ones body • Uncontrollable thoughts • Loss of job • Divorce • Suicide • Anger • Denial

Overview • Depression can affect anyone. • Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain. • Major causes are unforeseen life events, • death, divorce, any unexpected circumstances. • Being informed allows for an understanding • to be made for those suffering. • Treatment options: Antidepressants, psychotherapy, and electroconvulsive therapy.
