  3. To discuss what you did you vacation and where you went use the preterit of hacer and ir: Hacer > Hic Ir/Ser Hice hicimos fui fuimos Hiciste fuiste *Hizo hicieron fue fueron *Ser/Ir have identical preterit forms but the meaning is based on the context; no accents on yo & el/ella forms

  4. Ex: Ser = was (professions/descriptions) • Yo fui un guía turistica el verano pasado. • El viaje fue divertido porque hice muchas actividades. Ex: Ir = went (followed by “a”) • Mi familia fue a Colombia el verano pasado. • Ellos fueron a la corrida de toros en su viaje.

  5. To ask someone what they did and where they went: Ex: ¿Adónde fuiste el verano pasado? ¿Cómo fuiste? ¿Qué hiciste? ¿Cómo fue el viaje? Yo fui a Puerto Rico. Yo viajé por avión. Yo me quedé una semana. La pasé bien. Yo visité con mi familia, comí mucha comida buena, asistí a una discoteca, hice turismo y vi los lugares de interes y exploré la selva tropical. Fue divertido y me gustó mucho Puerto Rico.

  6. DAR y VER • Two other “kind of” irregulars: dar > d- / ver > v- • yo di / yo vi • tú diste / tú viste • él dio / él vio • nosotros dimos / vimos • ellos dieron / vieron *Dar and Ver have the exact same endings in the preterite and don’t have accents on the yo and el/ella forms

  7. DAR y VER • Ex: Yo di un paseo por la ciudad para ver los monumentos. • Ex: Marcos vio las pirámides aztecas. • Ex: Mi familia y yo dimos un regalo del viaje a nuestra abuela. • Ex: Los estudiantes vieron las ruinas en su excursión.

  10. What all other irregular spelling change preterit verbs have in common: • They can be classified by group that have a common base or preterite stem. (*memorize them by stem) • A combination of both AR and ER/IR preterit endings to add to stem • No accent marks on the endings Endings: e, iste, o, imos, ieron

  11. “ICE/ISE & INE” Verbs II. These verbs have in common a “i” spelling change in the stem and share ar/er combined pret. endings without accents: (e, iste, o, imos, ieron) A. ICE Verbs: Hacer (to do/make) Hacer (hice, hicisite, hizo, hicimos, hicieron) B. ISE Verbs: Querer (to want) Querer (quise, quisiste, quiso, quisimos, quisieron) C. INE Verbs: Venir (to come to) Venir (vine, viniste, vino, vinimos, vinieron)

  12. Hacer = did/made Ex: ¿Qué hiciste durante las vacaciones? Yo nadé y tomé el sol a la playa. No hice mucho. Ex: ¿Hizo Marcos una escala? No, no hizo excala porque Marcos fue por vuelo directo. • Querer = wanted to (querer + inf.) Ex: Los estudiantes no quisieron ir al catedral. Ex: Yo quise salir anoche pero trabajé. • Venir = came to Ex: Nosotros vinimos por autobus anteayer.

  13. “UVE & UDE” Verbs These verbs have in common a “u” spelling change in the stem and share ar/er combined pret. endings without accents: (e, iste, o, imos, ieron) • UVE Verbs: Tener (to have) & Estar (to be) Tener = (tuve, tuviste, tuvo, tuvimos, tuvieron) Estar = (estuve, estuviste, estuvo, estuvimos, estuvieron) Andar (*to walk) = (anduve, anduviste, anduvo, anduvimos, anduvieron) • UDE Verbs: Poder (to be able to) Poder = (pude, pudiste, pudo, pudimos, pudieron)

  14. Tener = had (*tener que = had to do…) Ex: Yo tuve que estudiar el español para el viaje. Ex: David tuvo un asiento en la clase turista. • Estar = was (temporary) (*estar w/location/health) ex: Yo estuve en Mexico por dos semanas el verano pasado. Ex: Juana y Alicia estuvieron enfermas en el viaje. • Poder = was able to (poder + vb. inf.) Ex: Yo no pude subir las montañas. ex: Pudimos aprender mucho de la cultura.

  15. “USE & UPE” Verbs • These verbs have in common a “u” spelling change in the stem and share ar/er combined pret. endings without accents: (e, iste, o, imos, ieron) • USE Verbs: Poner (to put/place) Poner (puse, pusiste, puso, pusimos, pusieron) ex: ¿Dónde pusiste mis boletos? Puse en la maleta. • UPE Verbs: Saber (to know a fact) Saber (supe, supiste, supo, supimos, supieron) Ex: Los estudiantes supieron mucho de las ruinas aztecas.
