  1. Concluding Remarks • Comments by FAIR Management • Review of PBAR at CERN and FNAL • Requirements of Experiments at FAIR • PANDA • FLAIR • AIC • PAX • PBAR Production at FAIR PBAR@FAIR

  2. Project Staging • Old idea: Staging of the project • (three stages defined by optimizing start of science) • New idea: Staging of the project • ( two phases defined/matched with assured funding level ) • Phase A = start-version • ( stage defined/matched with funding level by October 2007) • Phase B = all that‘s left out in Phase A • ( full project as defined by Annex of FAIR Convention ) PBAR@FAIR

  3. The STI recognized that there will be some limitations on the beams available to the various projects in Phase A but felt that they were acceptable in the circumstances. Even with this reduction it is a world class facility. PBAR@FAIR

  4. Start Version launched 7. Nov. 2007 PBAR@FAIR

  5. Multipurpose Facility FAIR • Beam Intensity: • - primary heavy-ion beam intensity increases by x 100 – x 1000 • - secondary beam intensity increases by up to x 10000 • Beam Energy: • - heavy-ion energy : x 30 • Beam Variety: • - antiprotons • - protons to uranium & radioactive ion beams • Beam Precision: • - cooled antiproton beams • - intense cooled radioactive ion beams • BeamPulse structure: • - optimized for experiments: from dc to 50 ns • Parallel Operation: • - full accelerator performance for up to four different and • independent experiments and experimental programs PBAR@FAIR

  6. Table of Parameters for comparison CERN & FNAL 4.6 E-6 7 E+7 PBAR@FAIR

  7. PANDA PBAR@FAIR

  8. PANDA Luminosity 7-10 GeV/c (high prec. mode) minimum 1031 ideally ~ 2·1031 at large momenta minimum 1032 ideally >2·1032 to increase discovery potential and reasonable nucleon structure measurements Maximum beam spread 7-10 GeV/c should not exceed 3·10-5 at small and large momenta should not exceed 3·10-4-5·10-4 respectively Running time ≥200 d/year  Detector maintainance ~3 m/year PBAR@FAIR

  9. RIBs to CR pbars to CR stable ions to NESR to low energycomplex FLAIR (ions, pbars) e- linac ER CR NESR pbar and RIB stochastic pre-cooling pbar and iondeceleration experiments with stored ions RESR pbar accumulation (RIB deceleration) FLAIR, AIC and EAR PBAR@FAIR

  10. FLAIR • PBAR Consumption • 108/cycle • Cycle time: 20-30 s • Pilot Beam same as HESR injection • Running time per Year • Whenever Antiprotons are produced at FAIR PBAR@FAIR

  11. AIC and EAR • Beam Time per Year: 2-3 weeks • Number of Stored pbars: 109 • Filling Cycles per Day: 3-5 • RESR blocked by RIBs PBAR@FAIR

  12. PAX PBAR@FAIR

  13. PAX • Required PBAR Production Rate: 2.107/s • PBAR Polarization: 20% • Proton Polarization: 80% • Running Time: 1-4 Year(s) at fb-1 PBAR@FAIR

  14. HESR PBAR@FAIR

  15. Average Luminosity strongly depends on thep-bar production rate Averaged luminosity, p-bar production rate 2*107 s-1 Averaged luminosity, p-bar production rate 1*107 s-1 PBAR@FAIR

  16. Wishlist of PBAR Users • PANDA: 2*107/s, 9 Months/Year = 5*1014 • FLAIR: 106/s, 5 Months/Year = 1013 • AIC: 6*104/s, 1 Month/Year = 1.5*1011 • PAX: 2*107/s, 12 Months/Year = 6*1014 Total : 1015/Year 1 Year: 3.15*107s Three Times overbooked! PBAR@FAIR
