  5. RESULTS…

  6. Athletic Identity - athletic identity is the degree to which an individual identifies with the athlete role and looks to others for acknowledgement of that role. It is a type of self-schema or how an individual perceives themselves. Which Results In…….. WHAT DOES IT ALL COME DOWN TO?

  7. LOSS OF IDENTITY

  8. LOSS OF IDENTITY THE STUDENT-ATHLETE IDENTITY…

  9. JENNA DOWNEY – CURRENT ATHLETE - ANTICIPATING “Thinking about life without hockey is exciting and scary at the same time. I have been playing this sport since I was 4.5 years old, so I will no doubt miss it. What I think I will miss the most is not even the sport itself but the relationships with the girls, and the experiences hockey has allowed me to have throughout my life. Hockey has defiantly been one of the biggest influences in my life, it has been the source of personal challenges and has taught me many lessons. I have always been a competitive person, someone who likes to push myself to be at my best so i think Ill have to find another outlet that will allow me to do this. I believe this is the exciting part, the thought of trying something new. After being a varsity athlete for 5 years, a new "sport" challenge is something I am looking forward to. I have already been thinking about whats next for me, maybe crossfit, maybe rowing, who knows. But at the end of the day, sports and physical activity has become apart of who I am as a person. I can't see life without some type of physical outlet.” STUDENT ATHLETES

  10. “Life after varsity sports... wow. its hard to actually put into real words to be honest. - Life after varsity sports is extremely difficult. You go from living your life 100% dedicated to a certain goal and to a certain team. All of a sudden you wake up one day and it has all vanished before your eyes. But as you grow and you start new chapters in your life you begin to realize how strong the relationships you build over the years has truly made you. You get the chance to finally take what you have learnt and share it with others, whether it be through coaching, working with co-workers, or creating new relationships/ friendships. As for the physical drive for competition, it has yet to fade away, despite my physical hardships. At 24 it feels as though my body hates me for putting it through the vigorous training and injuries, but I would not change it for the world.” AYLSSA HENNIGAR – FORMER VARSITY ATHLETE STUDENT ATHLETES

  11. AJ MACLEAN – FORMER QMJHL, ECHL, EIHL – CURRENT COACH IN OHL Although I have not ended my career in the sport inwhich I have centered my life around, I have however gone through various transitions throughout my career. Getting to transition from a player to a full time coach has helped with the hardships and battles of discontinuing my play. I am fortunate that I got to make my decision to retire and not because of injury or because someone told me I wasn’t good enough anymore. Life is certainly different; for instances my habits – how I work out, my diet and even my alcohol consumption (haha). My life has indeed taken a 180 compared to my playing days but in the end whether I was playing or to my coaching days now, hockey was also consider my “work” and I am fortunate enough to have had an easier transition out of retirement.
