It is hard to turn on the television now a days without seeing a new advertisement for another ab machine. These commercials would have you think that a flat stomach is simply a matter of using the machine once a day and not much else. The marketing ploy is spot reduction. It is one of the biggest misconceptions about losing belly fat. You can't do hundreds of crunches or sit-ups and expect washboard abs. It simply doesn't work that way. Technically, everyone has six-pack abs. They are just hidden behind a layer of fat when you are overweight. Once that fat is burned off, basically losing weight, you can then do abdominal exercises in order to develop your ab muscles. Doing ab exercises while you are still overweight will not do a good job of burning fat. The focus should be on fat burn and the best exercises for that include weight lifting, calisthenics, and interval training. The idea is to build muscle. Muscle burns more calories than fat and you will also burn calories during the day. Therefore, the more muscle you develop, the less fat you will have. Cardio is also great for burning calories but there is no need to overdo it.
