Middle Adolescent (15 – 18 year olds) Developmental Markers Shows more independence from parents Has a deeper capacity for sharing and caring Spends less time with parents and more time with friends Has more interest in developing relationships Learns more defined work habits Shows some concern about future plans Is able to give reasons for choices www.cdc.gov

  4. Post-Secondary PlanningWhat should I, as a sophomore, be doing now? Exploring your interests Participating in a job shadow Volunteering or working part-time Gathering general knowledge about post-secondary planning (college, gap year, military, work, technical and trade training) Talking to college students and recent grads Browsing the Direction center web site and the naviance family connection

  5. Post-Secondary PlanningWhat should I, as a parent, be doing now? Supporting Your student’s academic focus Encouraging your student to explore options – participate in a job shadow, volunteer, consider part-time work, join clubs Helping your student get the most out of present work Be patient. There is time to help your student explore and plan. No test prep courses necessary this early. More focused work begins junior year.

Next Steps after PLAN Focus on doing well in your courses this year Participate in co-curricular activities and other enrichment opportunities Shows interest and provides opportunities for leadership, teamwork and contributions to school and community Meet with house counselor in February to develop a course plan for junior year PSAT – october of junior year SAT/ACT – spring of junior year

Final Thoughts Ask for help with academics when you need it Look for ways to be involved, to measure interest, to learn about work Keep an open mind Seek out feedback from adults – advisors, teachers, counselors Visit the Direction Center Continue to do well in school Read daily announcements, your CVU email, student forum posts, and the Direction Center website
