  1. Insect Body Parts 2nd Grade By Jennie Mons

  2. The Head • The head is one of the main three body regions of an insect. The head includes the eyes, antennae, and mouthparts.

  3. Antennae • The antennae of an insect are used to smell odors or to sense touch. Antennae size and shape vary from insect to insect.

  4. Mouthparts • Mouthparts are different in each species of insect. Some insects, like grasshoppers, have chewing mouthparts. Others, like butterflies, have sucking mouthparts. The mouthparts determine how the insect eats.

  5. Thorax • The Thorax is the middle of the three body segments. It is split into three segments. There are three pairs of legs (one connected to each segment) and one or two pairs of wings.

  6. Wings • Most insects have two pairs of wings, but some, like flies, have only one pair. The wings can be soft or hard. Sometimes wings have small hairs or scales on them.

  7. Legs • Insects have six legs. They have a pair on each of the three segments of the thorax. The legs themselves are segmented, and usually the last segment has a small set of claws. Some insects have special legs for jumping.

  8. Abdomen • The abdomen is the last of the three main body segments. It consists of eleven segments itself. The abdomen contains the external genitalia of the insect. In females, these consist of an ovipositor.

  9. Conclusion • There are three main body segments of an insect. They are the HEAD, THORAX, and ABDOMEN. • The HEAD consists of the eyes, antennae, and mouthparts. • The THORAX is three segments and includes the wings and six legs. • The ABDOMEN is eleven segments and includes the external genitalia.
