  1. Leukaemia. Task. PRESENTERS: GALICIA SEGURA JUAN VÁZQUEZ JUÁREZ ARIADNA

  2. What is leukaemia? • The term leukaemia is used to describe a number of cancers of the blood cells. • Leukaemia is a type of cancer that affects the white blood cells, which become abnormal and grow and divide in an uncontrolled way.

  3. Aboutleukaemia • Blood cells are made in the bone marrow, which is the spongy part in the centre of the bone. In people with leukaemia, the bone marrow makes too many abnormal white blood cells.

  4. Aboutleukaemia… • The term leukaemia refers to a group of cancers of the white blood cells. If you have leukaemia, some of your white blood cells don't grow properly. They stay in your bone marrow and reproduce in an uncontrolled way.

  5. Types of leukaemia • Acute lymphocytic leukaemia (ALL) • Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL)Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML)

  6. Symptoms of leukaemia • The symptoms vary, depending on the exact type of leukaemia: • Weakness, tiredness and looking ‘washed out’ • Regular infections and high temperatures • Bleeding easily • Bleeding from the gums and nose • Bruising easily with no obvious cause • Pain in the bones and joints • Weight loss • Swollen lymph glands • Abdominal discomfort due to an enlarged spleen.

  7. Diagnosis of leukaemia • Blood tests – to check for large numbers of abnormal white blood cells. • Bone marrow biopsy – a small amount of fluid is taken from the bone marrow using a needle. The samples are then examined under a microscope. This test can help work out which type of leukaemia is present. • Lymph node biopsy – a small amount of tissue is removed with a needle from a swollen lymph node. It is examined under a microscope. • Lumbar puncture – fluid is removed with a needle from a space between the bones in the back. The fluid is looked at under a microscope.

  8. Diagnosis of leukaemia

  9. Treatment of leukaemia • Treatmentvariesconsiderably, dependingonthetype of leukaemiayouhave, butmayinvolve: • chemotherapy - medicines that destroy cancer cells • radiotherapy - X-rays that target cancer cells

  10. Treatment of leukaemia • Intensive treatment such as a stem cell transplant • Biological therapy • Steroids • All-trans-retinoic acid
