TIA TR-41, led by Chair Stephen R. Whitesell, focuses on establishing voluntary standards for user premises telecommunications, specifically targeting voice and IP applications. This initiative develops performance and interface criteria for VoIP terminal equipment, including various publications such as TIA-810-A, TIA-920, and TSB-116, which outline transmission requirements and voice quality recommendations. Additionally, projects like PN-3-0102 and PN-3-0061 examine WLAN requirements for VoIP and IP telephony security frameworks, respectively, aiming to enhance corporate communication systems.

TelecommunicationsIndustry Association • TIA is a full-service trade association representing makers of communicationsand information technology products and services for the global market place. • Divisions have a political focus. • Engineering Committees have a standards focus (ANSI accredited SDO). Stephen R Whitesell, Chair TIA TR-41
TR-41, User Premises Telecommunications Requirements • Addresses voluntary standards for telecommunications terminal equipment and systems, specifically those used for voice service, integrated voice and data service, and Internet Protocol (IP) applications. The work involves developing performance and interface criteria . . . Stephen R Whitesell, Chair TIA TR-41
TR-41 VoIP Publications • TIA-810-A, Transmission Requirements for Narrowband Voice over IP and Voice over PCM Digital Wireline Telephones • TIA/IS-811, Performance and Interoper-ability Requirements for Voice-over-IP (VoIP) Feature Telephones • TIA-912, Voice Gateway Transmission Requirements Stephen R Whitesell, Chair TIA TR-41
TR-41 VoIP Publications • TIA-920, Transmission Requirements for Wideband Digital Wireline Telephones • TSB-116, Voice Quality Recommendations for IP Telephony • TSB-146, IP Telephony Support for Emergency Calling Service Stephen R Whitesell, Chair TIA TR-41
TR-41 VoIP via WLAN Projects • PN-3-0102, Requirements for a Wireless LAN Based IP Telephony Subsystem • Will address requirements for enabling VoIP telephony communications via WLAN in a corporate environment. • Will not address residential and Public Access WLAN environments. • Will reference and draw heavily upon IEEE 802 layer 1 and 2 requirements while also addressing level 3 and higher requirements. Stephen R Whitesell, Chair TIA TR-41
TR-41 VoIP via WLAN Projects • PN-3-0103, Requirements for a Wireless LAN Based IP Telephony Endpoint • Will be patterned after TIA/IS-811 but will cover products with a WLAN interface instead of an Ethernet Interface. • In addition to WLAN support, it will address requirements for dial, keypad, and telephone feature operation, acoustic performance, EMC, power consumption, control protocol, security, etc. Stephen R Whitesell, Chair TIA TR-41
Related TR-41 VoIP Project • PN-3-0061, IP Telephony Security Framework • Will examine areas of physical and logical network architectural security, authorization, privacy, governmental requirements, etc. • Need a security package sized to fit in a handheld endpoint device. • To be published as a Telecommunications Systems Bulletin (guidelines document). Stephen R Whitesell, Chair TIA TR-41
