Physical Education Academic Content Standards

  2. The Why: • ODE’s focus to update all standards • Last physical education standards adopted in 2001 • Instructional materials in classrooms by fall 2018 • National Physical Education Standards in 2013 • Create grade-level outcomes

  3. The Why: • Ensure K-12 learning progressions • Citizens with life-long fitness/activity habits • Standards reflect culturally competent practices

  4. The Who • Content Panel—27 members • Representative of Oregon • Geographically • Grade levels • Experience • School and district size and demographics

  5. The How • Reviewed stakeholders’ feedback • Received 215 responses • Revised draft standards grade-level outcomes • Based on feedback and • content panel input • Content Panel recommendations presented

  6. Current Status • After State Board first read (May 2016) the standards and grade level outcomes were sent out for review by stakeholders • Received 212 responses • Responses reviewed, no changes made • Majority of responses were “appropriate rigor”

  7. Themes of Feedback and Proposed Actions • Need for professional development for Physical Education Teachers and Elementary Classroom Teachers • Need for development of guidance documents

  8. Next Steps With SBE approval of standards and outcomes • Instructional materials • Adoption Review Criteria committee selected • Criteria will be developed and recommended to the board • Advisory Panel • support of implementation of the standards
