    1. Effects of regular exercise and the cardiovascular system By the end of this lesson you should be able to explain the effects of regular and long term participation in exercise and participation

    2. GCSE PE Training Methods Months of Training can make big changes in your body. The most important is that the heart becomes more efficient.

    3. GCSE PE Training Methods On the heart and circulation Your heart grows bigger and stronger. It holds more blood and contracts more strongly. More blood gets pumped out with each beat. It becomes a more efficient pump and results in less stress on the heart.

    4. Your resting heart rate falls, because now you can supply the same amount of blood with fewer heart beats.

    5. GCSE PE Training Methods Heart Recovery Rate Heart recovery rate is the speed at which the heart returns to normal after exercise. The faster the recovery rate the fitter the person. A fast recovery rate is another long-term benefit of exercise.

    6. GCSE PE Training Methods Increased stroke volume Stroke volume is the volume of blood pumped out of the heart by each ventricle during one contraction. As the heart becomes stronger stroke volume increases, both at rest and at work.

    7. GCSE PE Training Methods Cardiac Output Cardiac output is the amount of blood ejected from the heart in one minute. Cardiac output= stroke volume x heart rate

    8. GCSE PE Training Methods Blood pressure Regular exercise reduces blood pressure. Exercise can help with weight loss, which can also reduce blood pressure.

    9. GCSE PE Training Methods Healthy veins and circulation Fitness increases the number of capillaries within the heart muscle. It also helps to make blood vessels more flexible and efficient. If a heart attack occurs, the area of damage is critical.

    10. GCSE PE Training Methods Healthy veins and circulation A blockage in a fit persons blood vessel is likely to result in less damage than it might in an unfit person. This is another long term benefit of exercise.

    11. GCSE PE Training Methods Causes of coronary heart disease (CHD) HEART DISEASE CAUSES MORE DEATHS IN THE DEVELOPED WORLD THAN ANY OTHER DISEASE!

    12. GCSE PE Training Methods Causes of coronary heart disease (CHD) The causes of CHD include; hereditary conditions, infections, high blood pressure and SMOKING.

    13. GCSE PE Training Methods PAST QUESTION HEART RATE is the number of times the heart beats per minute. A. Tick the following which describes what happens to a performers heart rate immediately they begin to exercise. (1 mark) Drops Remains the same Increases B. Give one reason for your answer. (1 mark)
